Putting yourself out there | Malaysia to Adelaide
https://malaysia2adelaide.wordpress.com/2013/02/02/putting-yourself-out-there
Moving to Australia and other life adventures. February 2, 2013. Putting yourself out there. I have to say, sometimes I wonder if I’m doing the right thing – blogging about my life in Adelaide. I did it not for fame or fortune (like, I wish! But because as a writer, I just need to write down my experiences, and since what I write could be beneficial, why not share it? It’s part and puzzle of being a writer, really. You have to be ready to accept criticisms – founded or unfounded. I don’t have to bl...

Weekend Joy | Malaysia to Adelaide
https://malaysia2adelaide.wordpress.com/2014/12/27/580
Moving to Australia and other life adventures. December 27, 2014. My trusty but rusty bike has taken me around Adelaide. Grab them before they’re gone! 8221; or sipping coffee with my laptop on my table in a cafe in a gentrified part of town where the leaves are heavy on trees and people talk in hushed tones over java and pastries. Now I’m working only 40 to 60 hours per fortnight. I spend my free time writing, volunteering, socialising and nature worshipping. I’m now actively pursuing what I used ...

Adelaide Hills ablaze | Malaysia to Adelaide
https://malaysia2adelaide.wordpress.com/2015/01/04/adelaide-hills-ablaze
Moving to Australia and other life adventures. January 4, 2015. And true enough, when I checked there was a massive bushfire raging in the Adelaide Hills, one that is worse that the legendary Ash Wednesday. I live in the South, thank God, but the foot of the Adelaide Hills is still near where I am. There’s no guarantee. Australia in the summer – not a fun place to be if you live in the hills. The 35-hour rule | Malaysia to Adelaide
https://malaysia2adelaide.wordpress.com/2013/05/30/the-35-hour-rule
Moving to Australia and other life adventures. May 30, 2013. One of the annoying requirements of the 475 visa i that we have to work 35 hours a week for one year. The problem with that rule is that we have no idea how strictly the immigration department will enforce it, and even. They will do it. For example, if you work 69 hours per fortnight, is that fortnight a write-off, or can it be considered close enough to 70 hours? Or, again, is your job a write-off? I called the Immigration SA. At one time, I w...

My personal brush with sham contracting | Malaysia to Adelaide
https://malaysia2adelaide.wordpress.com/2013/01/27/my-personal-brush-with-sham-contracting
Moving to Australia and other life adventures. January 27, 2013. My personal brush with sham contracting. And you’re wondering – what in the world is this sham contracting thing? Is when an employer pays you like a freelancer (called subcontractor here) but in actual fact, you work like an employee. This is the employer’s way of avoiding to pay tax and pay you benefits such as annual leave, supperanuation and give you insurance to protect you. My relief was short lived. The tax man speaks. When I told th...

The day I achieved my childhood dream | Malaysia to Adelaide
https://malaysia2adelaide.wordpress.com/2014/11/21/the-day-i-achieved-my-childhood-dream
Moving to Australia and other life adventures. November 21, 2014. The day I achieved my childhood dream. Anyway, I logged on to my e-mail to send a copy of my tale to myself – and then I noticed an email from my migration agent. My heart skipped a beat when I read the title of the e-mail: “Immi Grant Notification.” With trembling hands I opened the email. 8220;I refer to the application by XX for a Skilled – Regional (VB 887) visa lodged on 10 September 2014 with the department. Shit I just got my PR.
