Simmering in Kho Pha Ngan (with a jungle side trip) | Adam in Asia

Backpacking, bumming, and slumming through Asia. May 17, 2010. Simmering in Kho Pha Ngan (with a jungle side trip). However, Kho Pha-Ngan, while still touristy, is big enough to actually support all kinds of wants. Be it partying or simply lazing on the beach, it can accommodate almost anybody’s wishes. For me, I was craving the beach-bum life for a few days. 8221; Time to leave. Next up was a visa run and then Bangkok, city of angels and right now city of red shirts. Longboat ferry ride from beach to be...

Phuket – Tourist Land | Adam in Asia
https://apharrison.wordpress.com/2010/05/06/phuket-tourist-land
Backpacking, bumming, and slumming through Asia. May 6, 2010. Phuket – Tourist Land. After our outstanding introduction to Thailand, Jon and I decided to depart Krabi for Phuket. We did so with trepidation, as Phuket is Thailand’s number one tourist destination. Every day legions of vacationers fly direct from Europe to Phuket for a one or two-week stay, then hop back home. For many Phuket is all they see of Thailand. So after a day of Phuket, it was time to leave. But not before checking out the nig...

Feb 13th, 2009 at 1:33 PM. Ouray was amazing. One day of skiing at Telluride, and 3 days of ice climbing. I got up a beat-out WI5 on toprope, and led my first route on ice - a short WI3. There was a very tense moment placing the 4th screw at a vertical section with a strenuous stance, my feet 5 feet above my last screw :). The visual display of quantitative infor. View my Tags page. Mar 13th, 2009 at 10:22 AM. Hey y'all, it's been a while. I've taken to Facebook for the micro-updates that apparently take the place of 90% of my LJ posts. Find me on the FB if you want in. I picked up a new point and shoot, it seems to work just fine. I used to imagine the point when I would fall, and that would be it for me - death. Now, instead of dying, I'm flying". A cloud of chalkdust. then he was tucked and pulling away from the wall. Chute out, safe, flying. These people are really living. I'll ...

A pseudo trek and other adventures in Chiang Mai | Adam in Asia
https://apharrison.wordpress.com/2010/06/10/a-pseudo-trek-and-other-adventures-in-chiang-mai
Backpacking, bumming, and slumming through Asia. June 10, 2010. A pseudo trek and other adventures in Chiang Mai. The driver dropped me off at the Southern edge of the moat, waving his hand vaguely Northward by way of giving me directions on a place to stay. Walking up one of the main streets, I passed groups and individual monks collecting alms for the morning. I also fended off some dumb mutt that took offense to my backpacker appearance. I was very close to pegging the animal with a rock. Even though ...

Bummin’ in Bangkok Part 1 | Adam in Asia
https://apharrison.wordpress.com/2010/05/27/bummin-in-bangkok-part-1
Backpacking, bumming, and slumming through Asia. May 27, 2010. Bummin’ in Bangkok Part 1. Well now that I finally got the crash post out of the way, I suppose it’s time to catch up on my Thailand travels. Where better to start than Bangkok, and the infamous Khao San road! Throughout the city. Just another consequence of cramming people in an absurdly dense manner. My room was a closet masquerading as a guesthouse room. No matter, it was clean and cheap, so I took it, sour grapes be damned! So after a vis...

An Incredible Gibbon Experience (without Gibbons) | Adam in Asia
https://apharrison.wordpress.com/2010/07/07/an-incredible-gibbon-experience-without-gibbons
Backpacking, bumming, and slumming through Asia. July 7, 2010. An Incredible Gibbon Experience (without Gibbons). Many families, especially in the northern jungles, subsist through slash and burn cultivation, which is of course extraordinarily damaging to the existing ecosystem. The Gibbon Experience. The Swiss Family Robinson. Supposedly this means of travel is less impactful to the jungle wildlife than the alternatives, such as walking on marked trails. Really? It was probably the highlight of the trip...
