Neighbors Who Care | AgingOurWay

https://aging4dummies.wordpress.com/2010/08/20/neighbors-who-care

LGBTQ Elders Back in the Closet. August 20, 2010. The Caregiver Next Door. A piece in the New Old Age Blog (New York Times) by Paula Span, talks glowingly of a woman who is a one-woman senior service agency. She offers food, transport, and support to elders in one community of elders. I was happy to see this piece, as “new old age” isn’t just about diet and exercise and brain teasers. (This is what the families I know pay their babysitters.). 90% are women, almost a third are African-American, another third are immigrants. A third don’t have health insurance. Beth Baker writes in. That one of the jobs most in demand globally is direct-care workers. Let’s find new ways to thank them for their hard work. Betty White on SNL blasting the ageist stereotypes. Or not. June 3, 2010.

A good death | AgingOurWay

https://aging4dummies.wordpress.com/2010/11/17/a-good-death

Living Well — Where? November 17, 2010. A good death. What would it look like? My students weighed in — outlining their ideal death scenarios including having family close-by, to emotional preparation and goodbyes, to a shot to the back of the head without warning. They were talking about the moment of death. But what about the dying process? A blog on good death. Also attempts to take this ideal apart. It is worth thinking about. Responses to “A good death”. LGBTQ Elders Back in the Closet. Living Well — Where? November 4, 2010. Sorry for the delay on posting. Also moved to assisted living in her 90s, and loves it. (Have you read her book,. Somewhere Towards the End? It rocks.) My pal Christine, age 91, is thriving in a local green house. The Good Death: Personalizing your "deathbed"

http://thegooddeath.blogspot.com/2010/11/personalizing-your-deathbed.html

A discussion of all the ways we communicate about death. Wednesday, November 10, 2010. A fascinating article from the New York Times. About people going to major lengths to create a personalized space in which to die. The individual examples are fun to read through. But more than that, I think this article is yet another reminder of the beautiful work that hospice caretakers and social workers do for the sick and dying every day. Because these scenarios would not be possible without their help.

A discussion of all the ways we communicate about death. Sunday, February 7, 2010. Carla from Compassion and Choices. Raised an excellent point in the comments of another post. End-of-Life planning is rarely straightforward, and it's important to fully understand all sides of an issue before you make important decisions.
