On Thin Ice

Thursday, August 13, 2015. Week five. Yes, I think it's getting better, a little better all the time. When I broke my radius I wore a series of casts. The first one extended from my elbow to my knuckles and pretty much took my right arm and hand out of commission for the better part of five months. With the broken humerus I didn't get a cask. Instead I started off with this soft sling, courtesy of the ER. Labels: Insults and Injuries. Thursday, July 16, 2015. Tough start to the new season. The new skatin...

On Thin Ice: Summer Doldrums

http://www.agingskater.blogspot.com/2015/06/summer-doldrums.html

Tuesday, June 9, 2015. Summer Doldrums are better than Summer Tantrums but only just. Since my home rink closed for it's customary two month maintenance routine I've gone from skating four to six times a week to maybe twice a week if I'm lucky, when the alternate rink's (Piney Orchard) schedule and mine align. One of those times includes an ice dance lesson so I'm guaranteed to get on the ice at least once a week. Knees before placing the free skate on the ice. It actually worked! On Thin Ice: The essence of dance.

http://www.agingskater.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-essence-of-dance.html

Thursday, April 23, 2015. The essence of dance. I've been taking ice dance lessons for about a year and half. Technically proficient- but it lacks emotion. Realize that I'm skating a pattern dance and (b). Not have to squint too hard when attempting to guess which one. But something is lacking. That something is emotion. Or perhaps the best word is expression. What is dance expression? April 25, 2015 at 1:15 PM. But it takes time.and good luck. Another method is to look at a video of lesson now a...Anoth...

On Thin Ice: February 2015

http://www.agingskater.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, February 21, 2015. I'm a casual Olympic pin collector; mainly sailing (summer games) and of course skating pins from the winter games. I was idly trolling "flea-bay" about a week ago and spotted this unrelated pin:. I'm guessing perhaps it dates to the 1950s. Can anyone reading this post add to the story? Sunday, February 8, 2015. We arrived at 2:30 in the afternoon. Quiet Waters. It didn't take much arm twisting. I'd like to try this rink again when conditions are more favorable. I pla...Besid...

On Thin Ice: Tough start to the new season.

http://www.agingskater.blogspot.com/2015/07/tough-start-to-new-season.html

Thursday, July 16, 2015. Tough start to the new season. Risk" indeed. You don't want to wake up in the ER wearing this wristband. The new skating season for Bowie Ice Arena always starts with the rink's early July reopening after the annual two month maintenance shut down. This year that meant Monday, the 6th of July. Looking at the rink's schedule, there were no convenient times that date so daristdaughter and I deferred until Tuesday's 6:45-8:45pm public session. Labels: Insults and Injuries. Sorry to ...

L.A. SkateDad: - the parent is a special coach

http://la-skatedad.blogspot.com/2011/10/parent-is-special-coach.html

Sunday, June 21, 2015. The parent is a special coach. After recovering from her ankle injury and now back skating, it has been several months since I've had the pleasure of watching my daughter. I notice she has some technical faults - elements that "project" incorrectly. Hmmm, she says. So she goes back out on the ice and spins a couple more while I tape again. The next few spins are much better. "Nobody every told me that before," she comments, and all I can do is nod my head. Posted by Jeff Chapman.

8220;Strength” by Pete Sterpe. Where does the phrase “practice of everyday life” come from? Warning, in professor mode here). Thoughts about skating and the practice of everyday life. And how to fix it. Oh, so that’s how it goes! August 15, 2015. Now that there is a movement afoot to allow skaters to choose their own music for compulsory dances (hooray! Silver Blades and Pink Slippers. May 26, 2013 at 9:07 pm Posted in freestyle. Today I went to practice during a freestyle session for the first time in over a year (maybe two years? I’ve honestly lost track. I put skating on hold while I pursued my graduate degree. Now that I am finished with school, and I want to get back in shape and back on the ice. As I skated some laps, I actually considered hanging up the skates for good. I’m almost 31, do I really want to put myself through this anymore? So here I...

Silver Blades and Pink Slippers. August 27, 2014 at 4:22 pm Posted in moves in the field. I’ve been a little overwhelmed the last couple of weeks with wrapping up projects and reports at my job and moving to a new apartment. I’m starting a new position next week. I will have a shorter commute to and from work, so I’m hoping this will lead to more time and energy to skate in the evenings after work. 2 Comments ». Feed for comments on this post. Silver Blades and Pink Slippers. July 14, 2009 at 3:22 pm Posted in ballet. Coaching skating (especially beginners) takes a lot of energy because it is very hands-on. When I leave work I am exhausted and don’t feel like going to a dance class. But I will get around to it soon. I really do miss ballet, and it improves my strength, flexibility, and posture. I know Roberta (my ballet instructor) thinks I have dropped off the planet or quit dance permanently. Not so, I will return …. eventually. Create a fre...
