Harbour Air seaplanes bring you from downtown Vancouver or YVR (Vancouver airport) to Nanaimo harbour in a twenty minute scenic trip. Relax on Protection Island. Newcastle Island has a rich and fascinating history. For thousands of years, it was a significant spot for the Snuneymuxw First Nation. To get to Newcastle Island from Nanaimo, there is a dedicated foot passenger ferry service that leaves from Nanaimo’s Maffeo Sutton Park. Following Our 5 Kids on Their Learning Adventure. Asymp; Leave a comment. One of the resident docks and beach at Pirates Park. There are no paved roads on the island and very few cars (maybe a couple dozen), a lot of people have golf carts to get around the island. The beaches are beautiful and quiet and the atmosphere is so peaceful. It is a super small island and we easily walked around it with the kids, although Domonik’s broken leg made for longer walks.
