Tuesday, April 21, 2015. Sushi Kuni, 2901 Breton 3/26/15. They call themselves a Japanese Fusion restaurant and five years ago moved into the space that used to be Shogun. Enter this establishment and you are immediately struck by the lovely ambiance. The lighting is dim and the decor subtle and tasteful. The place is divided into two areas, this row of booths and small tables upon entry,. And another dining area with a few larger tables, a few booths, and the sushi bar. N to the entrees. The soundtrack ...

Thursday, February 20, 2014. Bangkok Taste Cuisine, 15 Jefferson 2/20/14. Matt had been here before with a group of friends but we had not been there together so today it was our lunch choice. We took a seat in this alcove, holding 4 more tables. At one point a cute little Thai woman stepped out from behind the screen (that leads to the kitchen) and waved at us and said hi as she headed to the ladies’ room. Everything about this place is friendly. The portions are large and we each took a box home. S...

Sunday, December 21, 2014. Taqueria Garcia, 3536 S Division 12/19/14. Ten days ago we lunched at Pho Soc Trang, located in the Asian Shopping Center at 4242 S Division, and on our way back north, we spotted several small hole-in-the-wall restaurants that we noted for another time. And today was one of those times. Located just north of 36th Street, the place will be missed if you blink. Another customer walked in, sat down at a table, and received table service. So it is available but you have to kno...

Saturday, March 22, 2014. Rincon Criollo, 1523 Grandville Ave 3/21/14. Scouting for restaurants we haven't written up, we came across this one south on Grandville Avenue. As we got close, we started to recall being here before some years ago and when we walked in, we were sure of it. At that time we took a look around, no one was there, employees or customers, the buffet looked closed, and we walked out. Today we stayed and were glad we did. Matt and Rachael shared it and took huge take-home boxes. And t...

Tuesday, September 17, 2013. Cranker's Restaurant and Brewery, 454 68th St SW - 9/17/13. Sometimes we meander around to see what we might find and today we happened upon Cranker's via a smart phone. It looked like an old drive-through something and we discovered it was a Schlotzsky's Deli in its previous life. Back in 2008, the Crank family purchased it and opened another Cranker's Coney Island. We subsequently decided to go with burgers, and thanks to Stella's, it's difficult to resist a stuffed burger,...

Thursday, October 23, 2014. Aroy Thai, 11221 Commerce (Lake Michigan Drive) 10/23/14. After a trip to a Sprint store for a phone needing repair, we headed further west down Lake Michigan Drive to see if we could spot a new to us local restaurant to try. Lo and behold, there was Aroy Thai. We spotted a car at the drive-through and almost bailed. What kind of Thai restaurant would have a drive-through? Five spice levels are listed but as we discussed the mild vs. medium with our server she advised that...

Sunday, December 21, 2014. Out and About This Weekend 12/18/14 - 12/21/14. Being out sick since Friday night, and just back to work last Wednesday, I felt the need to get out of the house on Thursday to go thither and yon and just be out among the land of the living. It was apparently a day for cops to be out and about and I found two along my short travels, one giving a ticket and one lying in wait at a bank. Although as one of my friends pointed out, isn't all leather used? The table and company were g...

Saturday, January 15, 2011. Cover Up (1949) Alfred E. Green. Meet “a small town with big secrets.” Dennis O’Keefe is the insurance investigator who arrives to gather information about an apparent suicide before his insurance company will pay out benefits. Clues and red herrings are tossed every which way, and you’ll be hard-pressed to tell the difference. Bendix and O’Keefe play well off each other, and throughout the movie you’ll be wondering where Bendix falls on the good/evil line. At the center of th...
