Life is too short for cheap beer.

Thursday, September 4, 2014. It must seem the height of vanity to return, essentially a year later, to an abandoned blog and address a waiting public that likely doesn't exist. But I will. Partly because I like closure, and partly because I like hearing myself talk, I'll wrap up this blog with a final post here explaining why I don't review beer anymore. Reason #1) can be summarily described in this post. As much as I claimed when I started this. In case it hasn't been said a million times, the rankings ...

Life is too short for cheap beer.: July 2013

http://alwaysanswerbeer.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html

Monday, July 1, 2013. Lawson's Finest Liquids - Toast. Deep brown that is nearly black, with a thick, mousse-textured tan head that is retained for several minutes and leaves sticky lacing on the sides of the glass. Very attractive pour. Exactly how I like a black IPA to smell - dark, roasted character from the malt, lending a robust espresso character, plus a more sweet, floral and resinous hop note that tempers the acidity from the dark malt. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Kern River Brewing - Citra DIPA.

Life is too short for cheap beer.: November 2012

http://alwaysanswerbeer.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 26, 2012. Hill Farmstead Brewery - Abner. This is a rotating release from Hill Farmstead which, as with any other HF I discuss here, was kindly sent to me by a friend who is able to take trips to the brewery. Ripe tropical aromas - mango and pineapple - bolstered by pine and woody resin. A hint of alcohol as the beer warms. On the palate, this reminds me a lot of Heady Topper. What varieties of hops were used, and when were they added to the boil? What kind of dry hopping? Etc Things lik...

http://alwaysanswerbeer.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html

Wednesday, February 13, 2013. Lawson's Finest Liquids - Fayston Maple Ale aged in maple barrels. Lawson's says of the regular Fayston Maple Ale : "A huge, rich, and strong stout brewed with a maple twist. Designed to keep you warm on sub-zero nights and for sipping with a fine meal or dessert.". There are definitely prominent oaky notes from the barrel, as well as a sweet hint of maple. The oak cuts through the maple nicely so that it's not overly cloying. There are also scents of chocolate, coff...The m...

Charming Wholesomeness: Book review: Daughter of Smoke and Bone + Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor

http://alwaysanswerb.blogspot.com/2013/03/book-review-daughter-of-smoke-and-bone.html

Tuesday, March 19, 2013. Book review: Daughter of Smoke and Bone Days of Blood and Starlight by Laini Taylor. Goodreads summary of “Daughter of Smoke and Bone”:. Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky. In a dark and dusty shop, a devil’s supply of human teeth grown dangerously low. And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war. All together, th...

Charming Wholesomeness: January 2014

http://alwaysanswerb.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 28, 2014. Book review:1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. Where do I even begin to describe a book like. This was my first Murakami novel, and though I felt, at times, that certain minutiae for which he is apparently infamous (food preparation, repetitive dialogue and re-iteration of expository detail) contributed unnecessary padding to the 1157 pages, overall I found myself quite swept away in the lyricism of the writing and the surreal but precise detail in observing the world of 1Q84. Stories ab...

Charming Wholesomeness: April 2014

http://alwaysanswerb.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Monday, April 28, 2014. Book review: Ruins (The Partials Sequence #3) by Dan Wells. The first thing I will say is this: Ruins, despite its bleak title, had possibly the happiest ending in a YA dystopian trilogy that I remember reading in quite some time, and, admittedly, I was kind of relieved. While I liked the trilogy overall a lot and was satisfied with the final conclusion, I did have some issues with this particular book. It’s hard to discuss some of them without getting a bit specific, so...I also ...

Tuesday, May 6, 2014. Book review: Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. Quickie summary: “In this classic story that inspired the hit movie by the same name, Charlie Gordon, a mentally disabled adult who cleans floors and toilets, becomes a genius through an experimental operation.”. End of this book are written in the author’s idea of mentally disabled pidgin, and it’s uncomfortable to read, to say the least.
