POLITICAL CULTS. MAG vs ANNI. February 25, 2012. For those who avoid long articles, please scroll down and read the points. I have made it clear from the time political parties were allowed to operate in Maldives, that I did not support it, nor saw it as a requirement for Maldivians to get the freedom and development they desired. Warning signs to consider whether any group is a cult, there are few points which are considered. Cults always have a single charismatic leader. While Anni has no official stat...

The Partial Truth. | Maldives in Transition
https://maldiveislands.wordpress.com/2012/02/12/the-partial-truth
Call it whatever name, the fact is it is a coup, and what Pr.Nasheed said at the podium is most likely the closest to the truth. However we now have enough reasons to believe that it may not be the whole truth. He indicated that should he continue to stay in power, there maybe foreign influence which he did not want. Having publicly announced his resignation, the Pr. Esident decided to change his story in a highly charged atmosphere among thousands of MDP Members at Dharubaaruge. This was where the v...

UNLAWFUL COMMANDS. | Maldives in Transition
https://maldiveislands.wordpress.com/2012/03/06/unlawful-commands
Unlawful and Unconstitutional commands will probably be considered one of the most sensitive issues in Maldives today. Among the theories being floated on what led to the resignation of President Nasheed unlawful commands is one of top reasons. Maldivian Laws related to the security services, Maldives Police Service and the Maldives National Defence Force are very clear on this. Any command which contravenes the Constitution of Maldives or any law of Maldives is void. Law Nr 5/2008 Police Act. The level ...

July | 2008 | Maldives in Transition

The Beast is now loose. July 9, 2008. I wrote this article on 28th Nov 2005, and it was published in a few websites. The contents are still valid hence I start off with this. As the fight for power between the leaders of DRP and MDP goes, the losers are the general public. It is a reality now to wake up in the morning and find the tabloids splashed with your face. It does not matter whether the story is true, who bothers to check the facts? The same goes to senior opposition figures. A recent article...

June | 2012 | Maldives in Transition
https://maldiveislands.wordpress.com/2012/06
Let go of your egos! June 8, 2012. 97,277 Maldivian voted for Mohamed Nasheed to lead them as President with Dr.Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik as his deputy for a period of FIVE YEARS. 82,121 people did not think so. Our problems started from the day the results of the 2. Round of Presidential elections were announced. There was a group within that 82,121 people who were just not willing to accept the decision of the majority to give Nasheed the 5 YEARS! February 2012 the President of Maldives resigned unde...

I am releasing him to make Aminath Jameel accountable. Let Aminath Jameel take the responsibility. These were the last 2 sentences of the verdict by Chief Judge Abdulla Mohamed when he released Ibrahim Shahum on 17. February 2011. Within a week (24. Feb 2011), the PG appealed the verdict in High Court. Shahum was in custody on suspect of murdering M.Beauty Flower Mohamed Hussain on July 30. March 2011, a month to the day, he was released; another youth of just 21years Ahsan Basheer became his next victim.

January | 2011 | Maldives in Transition

From the past – 1. January 8, 2011. This is a comment which I saw in Minivan News, back in 2006. Five years on, it still makes so much sense and as good a read. I have saved this and share it, with much appreciation and thanks to the original writer who is unknown. As an ‘independent’ (by which I mean indecisive and even a little spineless) observer of the developments in our little tea-cup of a country, I felt its time to come in and make a few suggestions to both sides of the great political divide.

The reality that politicians do not acknowledge. | Maldives in Transition
https://maldiveislands.wordpress.com/2012/03/10/the-reality-that-politicians-do-not-acknowledge
The reality that politicians do not acknowledge. Since the inception of political parties in Maldives, times have changed. The defeat of incumbent president of 30 years by a popular vote is the beginning of a reality that all politicians of Maldives have to accept. No one party is ever likely to win a Presidential election in Maldives and no one party will likely enjoy an absolute majority of the Peoples Majlis. So where do we go from here? With the unprecedented resignation of President Nasheed on 7.

Why didn’t you take this matter to Supreme Court? January 27, 2012. It is surprising how fast things change in a heated political scene. When I wrote my last article, what led Judge Abdulla to Girifushi, I still had a glimmer of hope that the Government may be able to get out of the hole they have dug themselves into. With regret it does not seem to be the case. This is where I seriously wonder who is advising the President on political and legal matters and to who’s advice he takes. The Supreme Court Ju...
