Ava's Math Blog

Sunday, December 20, 2009. Period class has a number of “energetic” boys. Some of them I know for sure struggle with ADHD and are usually on medication which helps increase their focus and productivity, but they sometimes forget or cycle off it for various reasons. Today when I was teaching that class, I called three people up to the front of the classroom to explain their work. When I looked back, I realized they were all boys, and they were not the best behaving boys. Links to this post. I think the tw...

Ava's Math Blog: Getting to Know Students

http://avaerickson.blogspot.com/2009/12/getting-to-know-students.html

Sunday, December 20, 2009. Getting to Know Students. I have been a big believer in getting to know one’s students. I have found this helps with classroom management and motivation, but more importantly it is what makes the job of teaching fun and meaningful and worthwhile. At the same time, I am finding this very difficult to do within the context of these observations. Some weeks I only saw my students once. I used to know everyone’s name, but now I hesitate on a number of names. I could see how this co...

Ava's Math Blog: Lightness

http://avaerickson.blogspot.com/2009/12/lightness.html

Sunday, December 20, 2009. There’s a math teacher I’ve observed here that I feel does an excellent job of treating student conflict and disobedience with a certain lightness and sense of humor that I admire. And I don’t mean lightness as in he avoids or tiptoes around conflict. It just seems to be not a big deal and no one is forced to get stuck into defending a position. I have to say that on the days I go to Chief Sealth, I feel a heaviness, and I even dread the mornings I have to come here. Brian McCa...

Ava's Math Blog: Internal Motivation

http://avaerickson.blogspot.com/2009/12/internal-motivation.html

Sunday, December 20, 2009. I am biased against extrinsic rewards and motivators, but I’m beginning to consider that they may have a role in teaching students intrinsic motivation. I think my Algebra I students are influenced by and have created a culture which somehow rewards not working (or at least doesn’t penalize it). Now they exhibit learned helplessness. When presented with a task, they don’t know how to get started unless someone tells them how. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). So Long (For Now...

Ava's Math Blog: Field Trip

http://avaerickson.blogspot.com/2009/12/field-trip.html

Sunday, December 20, 2009. Today I went on a field trip with the language arts teachers to the Seattle Art Museum. They needed an extra chaperone and I was curious to see how large public school field trips are pulled off. I was assigned a group of about 6 students. It was a little confusing because I was given a list of students but then one chaperone wasn’t able to make it and I was assigned a few extra students. The whole day I wasn’t sure if I actually had everyone. We had a discussion about this and...

Ava's Math Blog: Free Time

http://avaerickson.blogspot.com/2009/12/free-time.html

Sunday, December 20, 2009. Students at Chief Sealth don’t seem to get too much free time. They have 5 minutes between classes, no free periods, and a 30 minute lunch (with a 5 minute passing period on either side) which I imagine must feel rushed after waiting in line in the cafeteria (though I have no first hand knowledge of how long this takes—I microwave my lunch in the staff lounge). They also have a 20 minute DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) period everyday before 2. Is it so that the school day is a...

Hai's Math Education Blog: Counting down to the end of the quarter!

http://haismathtalk.blogspot.com/2008/12/counting-down-to-end-of-quarter.html

Hai's Math Education Blog. Wednesday, December 3, 2008. Counting down to the end of the quarter! I will be finishing up my first quarter in grad school at the end of this week. The two courses I've taken this quarter, Adolescent Development and Education and Technology, have helped me grow as a person, as a student, and as a future math teacher. If you asked me the first week of school if I thought I would learn anything interesting this quarter, I would've said probably not. December 4, 2008 at 8:58 AM.

Hai's Math Education Blog: On the Family Table: Family Reading Time: No Age Limit

http://haismathtalk.blogspot.com/2008/12/on-family-table-family-reading-time-no.html

Hai's Math Education Blog. Thursday, December 4, 2008. On the Family Table: Family Reading Time: No Age Limit. A friend of mine from high school recently created a blog. About encouraging more family time to build healthy relationships. He just posted a blog about the importance of reading out loud and how engaging it can be. I know this is a math blog, but I think that all educators encourage reading and expanding knowledge. The Family Fun Guy. December 4, 2008 at 11:32 PM. View my complete profile.

Teacher in Training: November 2008

http://mpotoshnik.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 17, 2008. If/when I get my first classroom. Will I be looked down upon by the other teachers with 20 years of classroom experience that do not use technology? With being the "new" teacher in the social studies department should I start my classes more traditionally and ease into the technology as to not upset the apple cart? Keeping myself politically/professionally safe. Or, should I come in and utlized technology to it's fullest? Posted by Mark Potoshnik. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Teacher in Training: becoming self-aware

http://mpotoshnik.blogspot.com/2009/01/becoming-self-aware.html

Tuesday, January 6, 2009. Happy New Year everyone! I hope all of you thoroughly enjoyed the holidays. The break was definitely needed but I am ready to start the new semester. In our first class for BEDUC. One of my goals this semester is become self-aware enough to realize when I might be imprinting my own biases into my interactions with my classmates. Tuesday, January 20, 2009. A wonderful day indeed. Soaking in the inauguration of our new president Barack Obama today gave me a great opportunity for reflection. How much different is every one's. Perception of our society today compared to two months ago. Has the reality of our society and culture really changed. I am sure for many it is life as usual. Thus far, I have been fascinated. Understanding Youth: Adolescent Development for Educators. By Michael J. Nakkula. A potential for an internal battle. He wanted to give us some preemptive. Hai's Math Education Blog: Holiday Math

http://haismathtalk.blogspot.com/2008/12/holiday-math.html

Hai's Math Education Blog. Thursday, December 11, 2008. These past few weeks as I wander the malls aimlessly trying to find the perfect gifts, I am amazed at how much "unconscious" math I've done. I say "unconscious" because I am doing these calculations without even thinking math. All I am thinking about is "How much money will I save on this? Is it true that when money is involved people somehow pay more attention? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). On the Family Table: Family Reading Time: No Age.
