土佐国井ノ口村 現 高知県安芸市 の地下浪人の家に生まれ、たぐいまれな商才と行動力を発揮して海運事業をおこし、三菱財閥を創業した岩崎弥太郎の生家跡。 藩への抗議 門柱への落書き をとがめられ弥太郎自身も投獄されてしまうが、獄中で商人から商売 算術の法を学び、商業の道に目覚めた。 商会に改称、これを母体にして、明治6年 1873年 に弥太郎の個人企業 三菱商会 が設立された。

鞆の浦の豪商 大坂屋が建てた楼閣で、江戸時代の思想家 頼山陽が招かれてここに滞在したおり、この建物を 対仙酔楼 と名付けた。 頼山陽が名付けたとおり、仙酔島の正面に相対する門楼 門の上につくられた楼閣 で、 仙人も酔うほどの美しい島 が由来とされている仙酔島の風景は、山陽の思索や著述に豊かな滋養をもたらしたのではなかろうか。 山陽はここで 山紫水明 という言葉を編み出し、そして後年完成させた 日本外史 は幕末の尊皇思想に大きな影響を与えた。 文化11年 1814年 に、頼山陽は招かれて大坂屋に滞在し、この門楼を 対仙酔楼 と名付けた.
