The Everlasting Climb: August 2013
http://www.everlastingclimb.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
One woman's quest to the top of a mountain. (Really any mountain will do.). Monday, August 26, 2013. Better than Gatorade at motivating runs. I'm not sure why I gave up half-way through what was supposed to be a ten-miler a few weeks back. I wasn't cramping or dehydrated. No soreness plagued my feet and knees. But there I was, approaching mile six, when I just quit. This is hardly exercise science, but I figure that if I can't finish a marathon, I have no business trying to haul myself up a mountain.

One woman's quest to the top of a mountain. (Really any mountain will do.). Wednesday, October 2, 2013. Awesome vs. Awful. Thanks to such scenes, it took us three hours to cover the one-mile route to the top of Aasgard Pass. In the central Cascade Range. At some point on these trips you find yourself wondering, can the awesome at the top possibly be worth all the awful? Our trip to The Enchantments, a restricted-access wilderness trail outside Leavenworth, Wash., included the following:. So yes, it was w...

One woman's quest to the top of a mountain. (Really any mountain will do.). Monday, July 15, 2013. Just me and my Ruby for this one. Photo by Matthew Piel. I'm rather co-dependent when it comes to athletic achievement. So I got pretty nervous when the friend enlisted for the two-day, 204-mile Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic. Had to bow out. But the entry fee was steep and the mid-point accommodations already paid for. "Yeah," I hesitantly told Matt. "I'm still going to do it.". Go as fast as you like:.

One woman's quest to the top of a mountain. (Really any mountain will do.). Thursday, October 10, 2013. Here's how it felt to run my first marathon:. Start Crowd. Cheers. Speed. Strong. Hill? Fly Amaze. Pride. Long. Pirates? Music People. Thirsty. Sports Drink. Gratitude. Turn. Pace. Go. More hill? Tired Exhausted. Sore. Walk? Okay, jog. Inspiration. Beer. Hill again? I ran faster than I expected; hurt more than I'd hoped; and finished with a kind of crazed, manic look on my face. Awesome vs. Awful.

One woman's quest to the top of a mountain. (Really any mountain will do.). Wednesday, February 12, 2014. You win this round, mountain. But I'll be back. Not long after the marathon. Guided trips up Mt. Rainier opened up. Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. Requires a $300 deposit, so I wanted to be pretty sure about the whole thing before signing on. Thus began a series of inquiries:. Yeah, but how scary is it really? I asked a friend who had been to the top. January ended and dates were gone. Make a summit at...

The Everlasting Climb: March 2013

One woman's quest to the top of a mountain. (Really any mountain will do.). Thursday, March 14, 2013. Slow Down, You Move Too Fast. 9:30 am last Friday found Matt and I sitting in the front of our Volkswagen eating pastries and waiting for the ferry to Lucerne. Lucerne isn't a town so much as a small dock with accompanying buildings more than two hours north, up the lake. Not much to do at Holden but stare at that view. The staff has occasional internet access, though my cousin Kari, Holden's kitchen coo...
