Behind the Glass

Wednesday, March 11, 2015. Some Reflections on the Scottish Curling Championships. Sadly, I was only able to make the Saturday sessions. See travelling on business? Anyhow, up we went to Perth, there to watch things and dream of times past. I don’t know about anyone else, but I always find it very difficult to support one team. It was easier in olden times when teams represented ice rinks and comprised typically local players. Now – it’s a nightmare! Back and forth we went, talking about old times, chewi...

http://behindtheglasscurling.blogspot.com/2014/12/bbc-sports-personality-of-year.html

Sunday, December 14, 2014. BBC Sports Personality of the Year. For some reason, BTG's invitation was lost in the Christmas rush post. Tssk, tssk, BT, whatever were you thinking? This has got BTG into a curmudgeonly mood. Normal service will be resumed next week. Batten down the hatches, curling HHYs, I'm coming after you again! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Behind the Glass is a comment column about curling in Scotland. It is written mostly by Robin Copland, with contributions from others.

Behind the Glass: April 2014

http://behindtheglasscurling.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Friday, April 25, 2014. It is 1972 and we are deep into the final of the World Championship in Garmish-Partenkirchen. Orest Meleschuk knows that he has to hit and stick within the eight-foot on tricky, heavy ice to score two and take the game into an extra end. His opponents were team USA, skipped by Bob LaBonte. Their round-robin records were Canada 7-0 and USA 4-3. Never was there such a mismatch, yet here we were – it all depended on the big fellow’s last stone. Don Chevrier pauses mid-sentence as the...

Behind the Glass: February 2014

Tuesday, February 18, 2014. Sochi's on my Mind (part two). Well; the dust has settled on the round-robin competitions and we enter the play-off phases of the competition with the semi-finals. In the ladies competition, Canada find themselves in that most unenviable of positions: top of the table, but about to face arguably the top team in the competition - our own GBR team skipped by Eve Muirhead. All I'm saying. Brilliant! Friday, February 07, 2014. Sochi's on my Mind! It’s not far away now! For some, t...

Behind the Glass: May 2013

http://behindtheglasscurling.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, May 09, 2013. Next season's big events. We just have the weather here and there’s an end to it. When you reflect on the quality of the gold medal winning skips, mind you, it is hardly surprising – Tom Brewster (twice), Ewan Macdonald and David Edwards! Eve Muirhead wasn’t a bad third for Ewan either, come to think about it (with no disrespect to the other thirds! To see if another gold medal can be added to the tally. Check out this website. Skip Cottage Curling: March 2011

http://skipcottagecurling.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Thursday, March 31, 2011. Rhona Martin did the honours in throwing the official 'opening stone', with local young curlers Fiona Telfer and Naomi Whyte in attendance. And here we all were, with the question, "How much help would Rhona's stone need to get to the tee? Actually, very little. Pretty much right on the poppy, Rhona, well done, although the perfectionists would say that Ruaraidh Whyte must have given her a couple of inches too much ice! Photos © Skip Cottage. Toothy Tales: And Not Forgetting the Juniors!

http://toothytalescurling.blogspot.com/2012/01/and-not-forgetting-juniors.html

Thursday, January 05, 2012. And Not Forgetting the Juniors! Well, Copey has done his bit about the Seniors (see Behind the Glass. So I thought I would bring a bit of balance by posting from here in Copenhagen about the European Junior Challenge. It is always a pleasure to come to Taarnby, though today’s flight was a bit on the bumpy side both taking off and landing! As I write they are playing the undefeated home team who have looked impressive so far. (Currently it is 2-2 after 5 ends). Another country ...

Toothy Tales: January 2012

Monday, January 23, 2012. Ireland won just one more trophy when they beat Wales, also by one shot (25-24) in a match where, by comparison, all the games were close and two of the games ended up peels, both achieved by the same Irish skip. It was seven years since Scotland last beat Ireland but they came out fighting this year and after two games (men and women) it was 19-8 in their favour. Unlike England, Scotland managed to hold on to their lead and actually extend it by two shots to win by 30-17. This ...

Skip Cottage Curling: January 2012

Tuesday, January 31, 2012. The Tulloch Haggis weekend at Greenacres this past weekend attracted an entry of 24 teams, local teams, teams from Ireland, Wales and a very interesting 'English' team, John Brown and three Canadians (now English of course). In two sections every team faced three eight end games to qualify, or not, for the High, Mid and Low roads. The teams enjoyed dinner on Saturday night and of course on Sunday a supper of haggis, neeps and tatties.". Photos courtesy of Hugh Stewart. Jennifer...
