Introduction
http://sacs.aeronomy.be/intro.php
Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy. Introduction to the Service. Volcanic eruptions may eject large amounts of ash (aerosols) and trace gases such as sulphur dioxide (SO. Into the atmosphere. These ejecta can have considerable impact on the safety of air traffic and on human health. Ground-based monitoring is carried out at only a limited number of volcanoes: most volcanoes are not monitored on a regular basis, in particular the remotely located volcanoes. Global observations of SO. On the basis ...

Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy. Sulphur dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere. Sulphur dioxide enters the atmosphere as a results of both natural phenomena and anthropogenic activities, such as fossil fuel combustion, oxidation of organic materials in soils, volcanic eruptions and biomass burning. Changes in the abundance of SO. Have an impact on atmospheric chemistry and on the radiation field, and hence on the climate. Consequently, global observations of SO. Are sporadic and intermittent;. The lifet...

Validation
http://sacs.aeronomie.be/validation.php
Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy. Validation of the Service. The detection of SO. Emissions, the selection criteria for the e-mail notification service will be validated against selected known volcano eruptions. Input for the validation is on the one hand the data from the NRT system and on the other hand information on volcano eruptions (from the VAACs, websites and newspapers). Note that the Service is not aimed at deriving SO. Extract from the "C5 Service Validation Protocol". Peak value will be u...

About us
http://uv-vis.bira-iasb.be/aboutus.php
Royal Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy. About the UV-Vis group. The UV-Vis DOAS group. The DOAS group concentrates on atmospheric chemistry related research, based on observations performed using the so-called Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) technique. Retrieval algorithms applied to ground-based and satellite instruments are developed and used to monitor the atmospheric concentration of a number of important trace gases like O. BrO, OClO, HCHO, SO. Directions to our institute.
