birding never sleeps

Friday, 31 July 2015. Dull July days in West Sussex. It is easy to forget how good Sussex was in June and at the start of July (Bee-eaters, Hudsonian Whimbrel, Terek Sandpiper and Squacco Heron) but for me at least it has been exceptionally quiet since then. Now, just as the first returning migrants are starting to appear along the coast, I am away for a couple of weeks or so. About 30 Swifts put on good display this evening over the garden. Atching over our house has given e a lot of enjoyment this month.

birding never sleeps: June 2014

http://birdingneversleeps.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, 29 June 2014. Birling and the Adur (29 June 2014). Black-tailed Godwits on the river by Ricardos. My favourite view at Beachy - looking over Birling to Hope Gap. Birling Gap and Belle Tout from the west. Dark Green Fritillary, about 10 were seen between Birling and Belle Tout lighthouse along with 25 Marbled Whites. Pyramidal Orchids on the Seven Sisters near Crowlink. Black-tailed Godwit on the Adur. The long bill and unbarred white belly of the second bird suggest limosa. Sunday, 22 June 2014.

birding never sleeps: September 2014

http://birdingneversleeps.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Sunday, 28 September 2014. Beachy and Seaford Head Barred Warbler 28 September. I met John and Doreen Cooper and John King at Birling. It was another pleasant day to wander around, with a moderate NE wind, but it soon became apparent that there were fewer birds in the bushes with most of the interest provided by a steady easterly passage of alba. Wagtails. A couple looked as if they might be White Wagtails but that is certainly not something I would like to claim on a flight view! Cliff-fall central yet ...

birding never sleeps: July 2014

http://birdingneversleeps.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Saturday, 26 July 2014. COLOMBIA 2014: Otun, Cerulea, Bioandina and Monterredondo. White-capped Dipper, a firm favourite of mine. Southern Lapwing, not quite as impressive as ours. Wanting to know what two 4WDs full of foreigners were doing on a small dead-end track. They had clearly been tipped off as to our presence but Pablo soon assured them we were harmless (and leaving). Common Tody-Flycatcher at our breakfast stop. Bananaquit, regular on the feeders too. At 1/250th second they are hardly visible.

birding never sleeps: a few days in the North East (4-8 July)

http://birdingneversleeps.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-few-days-in-north-east-4-8-july.html

Saturday, 11 July 2015. A few days in the North East (4-8 July). Impressive ruins in a superb setting. Looking south from Dunstanburgh. Coquet Island is just visible on the central horizon, Craster in the middle distance. Seabird cliffs at Dunstanburgh. Swallow breeding on Dunstanburgh Castle ruins. Bamburgh Castle from the Farnes. Longstone Lighthouse, made famous by the exploits of Grace Darling. Arctic Tern keeping an eye on us. Its young chick was nearby. Adult and older juvenile. Rievaulx Abbey from...

organicbirder: June 2015

http://organicbirder.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 30 June 2015. I had a delivery of our top quality organic veg and fruit to do in Southampton today which was handy as a Monarch. Butterfly was reported from Lordswood Road mid-morning. I stopped off on the way to the delivery but no sign although there was a Silver-Washed Fritillary. In amongst the many Meadow Browns. Back again after the delivery and it appeared my luck was out as I'd just missed the Monarch. On arrival again no sign! Earlier in the day, hmm.worth a look anyway I thought. Annoy...

Monday, 22 September 2014. Not much at all yesterday but here's one of the Hayling Red-Backed Shrike. Saturday, 20 September 2014. Spent most of this week outside work time (and child care! Trying to get a shot of the Dartford. At Hayling and.failed. So here's some other stuff instead:. Sunday, 14 September 2014. I'll start with the star bird today which was a Wryneck. And for a change it actually was, keeping close company with the Starling. At North Walls, still the lovely Curlew Sandpipers. Another lo...

organicbirder: January 2015

http://organicbirder.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Friday, 30 January 2015. Although I hadn't planned to, dropped in at Coldwaltham sewage works on the way back from Rackham today to find the two Siberian Chiffchaffs. Showing well with six Chiffchaffs. And a party of Long-Tailed Tits. At Rackham, a Marsh Tit. Were the highlights whilst a 2015 Sussex Lesser Pecker still shuns me! Sunday, 25 January 2015. Was distantly present at Chichester Marina today with 20 Little Grebes. And a Great-Crested Grebe. This was the best I could do pic-wise:. Were on the wi...

organicbirder: Spotted Flycatchers at Oving & Church Norton

http://organicbirder.blogspot.com/2015/08/it-was-childcare-for-me-all-saturday.html

Monday, 17 August 2015. Spotted Flycatchers at Oving and Church Norton. It was childcare for me all Saturday but some diversion was provided by two Spotted Flycatchers. In the garden in Oving. I was called "jammy" for this.better not mention the two Pied Flycatchers. A shout from HR on Facebook and a zoom down to Climping on Saturday night got me Long-Eared. L in flight and Short-Eared Owl. And a rather baffled youth in a Saxo wondering what all the people were doing in the area. The deal's off pal!

organicbirder: December 2014

http://organicbirder.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 30 December 2014. Took Dad up to the Ferry Pool at Sidlesham this morning for the Tundra Bean Goose. Which obliged, albeit fairly distantly at the back by the 12-bar gate. It was a lifer for him though I reckon he might just have forgotten that he saw a few around Rye in the 50s! Incidentally, whilst we were there news broke of a Little Bustard. At East Guldeford who Dad used to play football for back in the day). At Chainbridge, a few Stonechats. And a bright yellow Chiffchaff. It would appear ...

organicbirder: November 2014

http://organicbirder.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, 29 November 2014. Two plus Short Eared Owls. At Barnham this evening. Previously, a Black Redstart. At East Head, Wittering. Friday, 28 November 2014. No wonder the Little Owl. Consolation was a flighty Hawfinch. In the trees on the sharp bend near Yew Tree Cottage but apart from that fairly quiet if you see what I mean. Monday, 24 November 2014. Record shot below not great but I'm a happy birder tonight as it was a great improvement on views in dismal light! Sunday, 23 November 2014. On Ibsley...

organicbirder: February 2015

http://organicbirder.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html

Saturday, 28 February 2015. Was seen in a few different areas of Old Lodge on Friday which shows how mobile the Reed Bunting. Flock is that it is part of. May have caught up with it at 15:30 when I inadvertently spooked the flock into a Scots Pine by coughing but distance was a problem. Or more likely Reed Bunting. Looks to have good face pattern, crown stripe, pink legs, tiny bill and eye ring.but outer crown stripes too pale? Probably then, Reed Bunting. Thursday, 26 February 2015. And a few Goldeneye.
