Adventures of a Bird Nerd. April 1, 2014. First Attempt at Spring Birding. It was such a lovely day yesterday…sunny and warm (well, relatively warm, single-digit temperatures, woo! That I decided to take some time in the morning and go birding! Here is the eBird checklist. Anyway, have some photos…. Wood Duck and Mallards. Also I must note that this morning, we caught sight of a Golden-crowned Kinglet in our backyard! Spring migration is underway! Laquo; Baillie Birdathon 2013 Wrap-Up! Great Canadian Bir...

Hawk Hawk HAWKKK!!! | Adventures of a Bird Nerd
https://birdnerdadventures.wordpress.com/2012/09/12/hawk-hawk-hawkkk
Adventures of a Bird Nerd. September 12, 2012. Sharp Shinned Hawk (juvenile male) staring down the camera! For a super crazy slow day (we banded a mere 14 birds today, and I did only 2 of them myself) we had one bird that was pretty exciting! I’m bummed that I missed out on extracting this guy from the net because I’d really like to see and/or try it myself, but I got to band him! That was pretty great. Any day where I can hold a hawk AND a hummingbird in the same morning is a good day. Laquo; Busy Times.

Adventures of a Bird Nerd. September 11, 2012. So busy I haven’t had a lot of time to take pictures, but here are a few…. White Throated Sparrow (Tan Morph). Today in particular was quite busy, we banded 89 birds which is a new daily record for the season. We’ve been seeing Yellow-Rumped Warblers and a couple of White Throated Sparrows (like the one pictured above) which are sort of harbingers of the end of the season. Soon we’ll be seeing juncos and kinglets? September 6, 2012. I mean, I don’t REA...

Waterloons: June 2015
http://waterloons.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Wednesday, June 3, 2015. Cycle path for Lexington overpass? Wednesday night, Waterloo city staff presented their proposal for Lexington Road to the public. After three years of silence, we now get to see how we might bridge Waterloo's great cycling gulf. The proposal is an interim plan. Staff are telling us what they can do now, instead of ten years from now. Not to be forgotten are a couple of pedestrian refuges which will make crossing Lexington on foot safer, and catching GRT's route 31 bus on the oth...

Glass Art by Erin Moffat. Newer posts →. Back to the Future. April 1, 2014. Well After an update of my self-hosted WordPress install did some bad things to my website, I killed the whole thing in a fit of frustration and now, we’re back to this. But in the meantime I should probably go do some studio work. That is why I’m here, after all. July 30, 2013. I’m taking back my WordPress. Waterloons: December 2013
http://waterloons.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 4, 2013. Waterloo really does bike! There's a lot going on in Waterloo for bikes. And I'm not just talking about Waterloo Bikes. Though they'll come into it). Maybe when they took the fluorine out of the water, they put something else in, because change is afoot in Waterloo- real physical change, and change in perspective. Uptown Protected Bike Lanes? Let's start with the changing attitudes. I've raised the Uptown Streetscape improvement plan before. Which led to a CBC radio spot.

Waterloons: May 2015
http://waterloons.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, May 28, 2015. Uptown Streetscape is a thing! On Monday, I had the great pleasure of speaking to Waterloo City Council on behalf of the region's Active Transportation Advisory Committee. In our last meeting, the committee endorsed the plan presented by the project consultants and city staff to revamp Uptown Waterloo's streetscape with wider sidewalks and protected bike lanes. I also had the pleasure of watching that plan passed unanimously. We got Waterloo informed, and engaged. There are still ...

Sunday, April 6, 2014. The Cost of a Costco. And I can't disagree with that. What brought me to write this post was not "Costco is evil! With that, I return you to the post as originally written. A lot of people are discussing the prospect of a new Costco store on the west side of Waterloo, across from the landfill. Why wouldn't we want them to come in with another store? And that is because greenfield development is easy and profitable. Given ample space and without historical site contamination ris...
Waterloons: The art and science of transit stop placement
http://waterloons.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-art-and-science-of-transit-stop.html
Wednesday, May 27, 2015. The art and science of transit stop placement. Man, it's been a while since my last post! I've been busy with the Active Transportation Advisory Committee, still working a little with TriTAG, but mostly taking care of real life. But the march of progress brings new lessons and observations. I have a few things to post about now, but I'll start with what is freshest on my mind. The new 204, and Queen St. Regional Council's Planning and Works committee heard from a few delegations ...
Waterloons: Election thoughts, LRT thoughts
http://waterloons.blogspot.com/2014/10/election-thoughts-lrt-thoughts.html
Sunday, October 26, 2014. Election thoughts, LRT thoughts. I haven't posted here in a long while, because as the election got rolling, most of my energy went towards TriTAG. Who I have been working with since 2012. Once again, we have a big LRT fight. In the last few months, we've seen the rise of a well-funded anti-LRT crusade led by Jay Aissa. And as a result, it's the same old battles, the same old wounds reopened, and a lot more vitriol and no small amount of misinformation and unfounded arguments.
