ToyBridge: Overcall lunacy
http://toybridge.blogspot.com/2012/11/overcall-lunacy.html
During the NZ teams I played on a 5 person team which wasn't very serious about its chances. We had two pairs that had played quite a bit together but they had a player in common so at most we had one stable partnership. Nobody dreamed of saying no and so I got the opportunity to play on a team and at the table with a New Zealand bridge legend. And what did I pick up? After one pass, John opened 1 ♦. And before I could bid 1 ♥. Seemed like a good result. A good result indeed, what was East up to? Novembe...

ToyBridge: November 2011

I'm real (and this is what I look like). For those of you who were starting to suspect I'm a robot or a sentient pair of scissors I have pictures to prove otherwise! Here are some things I like to do when I'm not playing bridge:. Try on silly hats. Have a beer or two. Normal service will resume shortly. Posted by Daniel Skipper. I love spot cards. Here's a little hand that came up recently. North opened 1 ♦. You bid 1 ♥. And when South bid 1NT everyone was speechless. 7643 force out declarers remaining Q5.

A strange convention has come to my attention. I don't know where it came from but I'd like to send it back. Natural but forcing to game (2/1 style). If you don't play 2/1 then imagine another GF auction, say:. Do you do this? Either penalties or doesn't fit double. This is what I call a backwards double. You have to pass when you want to double and double when you want to pass. I want to penalise. Suits or shape worth bidding. Posted by Daniel Skipper. The money or the slam. Showing a positive with 4.

Now that your new years resolutions aimed to avoid over bidding, over sacrificing and playing Gerber have worn off it's time for a bidding problem. Lets say you're nil vul, 4th to act and playing Imps. If you double then tell us what you'll do over partners 3 ♦. Posted by Daniel Skipper. I love opening, it's why I turn up to bridge and one of the reasons I venture into silly systems. In these examples everything is mostly natural. Second seat, unfavourable. Partner responded 2 ♥. ToyBridge: Electric Ant
http://toybridge.blogspot.com/p/electric-ant.html
Updated 7 Dec 2010). Electric Ant is the system I designed after getting annoyed at losing pairs events because I sat the wrong direction, didn't get any points and got bad board after bad board because my opponents did normal stuff. The key is you can open just about any rubbish, points, shape or not but it still allows a high degree of accuracy so you can do well when the cards are on your side. Here's the opening structure:. 8 - 11, 4 card. 1NT 12 - 14 balanced (or 4441 which is balanced right? When p...

Learning bridge feels hard (link). Here's a post I stumbled across a while ago. It's about learning to write software (the other flavour of blog I frequent) but it applies at least as much to bridge. Go have a read: You have to get good before you get better. Posted by Daniel Skipper. RKCB for the lose! On a cold wintery evening while shuffling and dealing for bidding practice (with all the deuces removed) I was handed this:. That's a two loser, eleven. Playing trick hand. Partner opens 1 ♥.
