Broken Network: November 2012

http://blog.brokennetwork.ca/2012_11_01_archive.html

Keep on Routing in the Free World. Monday, November 5, 2012. OSPF NSSA External LSA: Type 7. 160; Good stuff! 160; We’re almost done.  Last up is the OSPF Type 7 NSSA External LSA. Thursday, November 1, 2012. OSPF External LSA: Type 5. Welcome to the OSPF Type 5 LSA! The Type 5 LSA is used to advertise routes that are external to the OSPF domain within the OSPF domain (hence the External moniker). There are two types of Type 5 LSA’s: Type 1 and Type 2 (seriously? 160; We’ll be looking at both here.

Broken Network: RIP Distribute-lists and the Extended ACL

http://blog.brokennetwork.ca/2013/09/rip-distribute-lists-and-extended-acl.html

Keep on Routing in the Free World. Sunday, September 22, 2013. RIP Distribute-lists and the Extended ACL. Here’s a neat trick that’s an easy one to screw up or forget the syntax on. In RIP (and EIGRP as well I believe) you can use an extended access-list to filter out specific routes advertised by specific neighbours. This is done using the source and destination fields of the extended ACL to specify source of the routing update, and the route(s) you want to filter respectively. Example after the jump.

Broken Network: February 2013

http://blog.brokennetwork.ca/2013_02_01_archive.html

Keep on Routing in the Free World. Sunday, February 24, 2013. And that about sums up my afternoon sitting in the American Eagle terminal. When Dreams Die (Or at least get put on hold). On February 21st, 2013 I failed the CCIE R&S lab for the 5th time. Thanks to everyone who stops by here and reads what I put out. And thanks to everyone who's helped me along the way so far. With a little luck I can be back on the trail sooner rather than later. Saturday, February 9, 2013. So here's to all of you! All mate...

Broken Network: September 2012

http://blog.brokennetwork.ca/2012_09_01_archive.html

Keep on Routing in the Free World. Monday, September 10, 2012. So here's my token "back in the saddle" blog post. I've been doing anything other than studying lately. Since my last attempt in May I've been rather demoralized, mostly exhausted, and utterly disinterested in looking at anything that remotely resembles the CCIE R&S lab exam. I suppose failing the thing four times will have that effect on a person. But enough screwing around. I need to get this finished and move on with my life. So here's my ...

Moving Ones and Zeros. Ramblings of a Network Engineer. CCIE R&Sv5 Lab Attempt 1. I passed diagnostics, just missed troubleshooting and failed configuration. So my lab experience, that's what you're hear for, right? OK, here we go. Troubleshooting is what makes or breaks you as an engineer. I feel if you truly understand a technology you can troubleshoot it. The CCIE lest you know, that you don't know shit. Config was a beast! http://blog.movingonesandzeros.net/2014/11/ccie-bootcamp-first-two-days.html

Moving Ones and Zeros. Ramblings of a Network Engineer. CCIE Bootcamp - First Two Days. First two days of my CCIE bootcamp have been pretty good. David Smith, with INE, is great and he is very passionate about the topics. Dave's teaching style makes it super simple to stay focused and engaged. He has some great soap-box style rants and loves to points out screw-ups in IOS. I love it! PPP was, welll.PPP. I hate PPP and its one of those topics I have to suck it up and get comfortable with. Another topic th...

Not Another Network Blog. Musings from yet another network IT nerd. This month I am studying in preparation for my CCIP BGP MPLS exam (booked June 27th). I decided to go through with the CCIP certification, despite my annoyance with the new Service Provider track. Manual static Null0 routes advertised in BGP. Let’s look at a scenario. This is taken out of a BGP topology I’ve been working on this week to help me gain a better understanding of some of the more advanced BGP topics. Note: this is my best gue...

Not Another Network Blog. Musings from yet another network IT nerd. Encapsulating, shim headers, tunnelling – does it matter? I overheard my manager today giving one of the new junior guys the run-down on basic encapsulation methods and general IP. Basically, how to TCP/IP. In explaining 802.1Q and VLAN tagging, my boss uttered the following phrase:. 8220;…a switch encapsulates the frame with the VLAN number…”. A 8021Q tag actually modifies the Ethernet header and is more like a shim header. Of those ter...

I'll write a witty tagline later. How to write an SHA-1 implementation in ActionScript 3 that's 14x faster than Adobe's. April 2nd, 2012. Is the defacto library for all common utility functions in ActionScript 3. While it’s a reasonably good codebase, it’s also unforgivably slow sometimes, which led to the creation of actionjson. Its SHA-1 implementation leaves a lot to be desired, and this article takes us through the steps I took to write new one, to help understand what makes AS3 slow. It seems pretty...

While writing up the previous post on BGP Conditional Route Injection. I got an idea while I was verifying the information in the post.
