Urban Farms, West Oakland Murals. November 29, 2011. Doing a story for BioCycle Magazine on Urban Farms and their related urban ecosystem milieu. Went to meet with the owner, a friend of a friend, of The Ranch at Dogtown. And the Bay Area, and affluence, humming all around, it's the perfect case-study in food insecurity, largely black, and my home. Urban farms have to be added together in order to make a farm. Bold and italics mine). Video from chow.com. And that's in Philadelphia! April 5, 2011; Novella...

Tamalpais's Shadow

http://blog.paulhagey.com/2010/December

December 31, 2010. The Catholic church a few blocks from my house had a real midnight Christmas Mass which was cool. A huge, 100-foot Christmas tree, a black Catholic church with a white (German? And I think we danced for about 75 to 80 percent of the service (awesome). December 27, 2010. At Sacramento and Ashby: saw a gunman today running after firing five shots. Crazy. Apparently it's a hot corner. Best of the Year? December 24, 2010. And a related question: Why are these articles free? Published in Th...

Tamalpais's Shadow

http://blog.paulhagey.com/2010/November

Some thoughts on a niece. November 22, 2010. I recently moved to the Bay Area largely because my brother and sister, and my brother's family, live here now. We were born and raised in Austin, Texas. Anyhow, my brother has two children, 5 and 2, girl and boy. I've been staying in their Oakland Hills house for a few months (which has a whole separate level), and it's been great to form a casual relationship with the little ones. We eventually made it to San Pablo Reservoir, a large stocked lake just inland...

http://blog.paulhagey.com/2011/Feb-Oct

October 30, 2011. Went to drop off some chocolate to my sister-in-law, who fell and had a level I or II concussion, the evidence of which was extremely scary. Shed whole new light on the NFL situation. My brother and she have three kids. A girl, 6, a boy, 3.5, and a 5-monther? Anyway, that's a blessing, at least. Shots in the Dark. October 28, 2011. Yesterday, Oct. 27, at about nine pm I left home for a walk down Linden St. to Lowell Park. Somebody was going for it down there. He said, Yeah, I was wo...

Trying to simply set the clock automatically on this ‘smart managed’ network switch turned into a bit of a challenge. Whenever a time sync is attempted from the NTP server it would fail. With this static route added, our NTP request succeeds. Continue reading →. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. This entry w...

Arduino MIDI Foot-controller Project. So we’ve got a nice Hammond sloped case ordered and are awaiting it’s arrival sometime this week. With that, we’ll slap 10 heavy-duty push-button foot-switches on the top face, maybe a half-dozen 1/4″ pedal jacks on the sides and a MIDI out jack on the back. Voila! A 10-button foot-controller with inputs for additional foot pedal inputs (switch or continuous, who knows? This entry was posted in Projects. Just recently Ive been to a few talks about Kotlin. And been reading up about Android Architectural Components. Ive also had an idea for a really basic app playing around in my mind for a while, so it seems a perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. Tamalpais's Shadow

June 21, 2015. Made a trip to the hippie wonderland of Mount Shasta. I've always wanted to go. This is more than 10 years in the making. I've heard that the number of crystal healers per square mile up there rivals the density anywhere else on earth. I think it might be true. There's no doubt about the gravity of the mountain, whose mass and height helps water 75 percent of California's needs. Yes, you heard that right. The store sells "prana produce.". In the next field over from the little concert, the...

Technology, business and other musings. Dependency injection for SpecFlow with Unity 4. One of my current projects is using SpecFlow for testing some complex security logic; there are lots of scenarios so the BDD style of testing is well suited to the problem. I wanted to use the same style of testing for some integration testing where the client is talking to my API but hit a problem of how/where to construct the container as even the client library uses dependency injection to construct itself. What we...

Blood, Sweat, and Code. Android Layout Simplified – 1.) LayoutParams. March 21, 2012. I’ve been doing a lot of Android development lately, and I feel like there’s a huge lack of information about how layouts actually work in Android. All over the place you find questions like “How do you use X” and the accepted answer is always “Oh, X sucks, use Y instead” (I’m looking at you StackOverflow). X doesn’t suck. You just don’t know how to use X. Imagine I were to write a. So instead, each view has a. On view ...
