Better Ruby Presenters - Literate Programming

http://blog.steveklabnik.com/posts/2011-09-09-better-ruby-presenters

No seriously, helpers suck. Why not a class method? Blocks vs. Policy. This is too verbose. Where does all of this go? In conclusion: A shout-out. My last blog post. Caused a bit of a stir in some circles. I got a bunch of emails. Apparently, I need to expand on a few things. So here we go. Lets rap about the Presenter pattern, shall we? No seriously, helpers suck. But I digress: objects functions. At least in the context of getting stuff done in Ruby. This pretty much applies to most of t...Yep, thats r...

Why I don't like factory_girl - Literate Programming

http://blog.steveklabnik.com/posts/2012-07-14-why-i-don-t-like-factory_girl

How did we get here? Back to basics: TDD. Why I don't like factory girl. Once upon a time, I was building my First Serious Rails App. I was drawn to Rails in the first place because of automated testing and ActiveRecord; I felt the pain of not using an ORM and spending about a week on every deploy making sure that things were still okay in production. So of course, I tried to write a pretty reasonable suite of tests for the app. Then I read a blog post about FactoryGirl. Holy crap! That was one test....

How I learned to stop worrying and love REST - Mike Mayo

http://www.mikemayo.org/2012/how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love-rest

Larr; Mike Mayo. How I learned to stop worrying and love REST. Buzzwords can be a funny thing. I’ve been writing (what I thought were) ‘RESTful’ web apps and APIs for five years now, and it wasn’t until a couple of weeks ago that I really began to understand what that meant. I’d like to share my ‘ AHA. 8217; moment, and give a concrete example of why following the REST. Style correctly can save you headaches in the long run. TL;DR: A RESTful API. At Twin Engine Labs. At this point, the iOS app was comple...

The Journey

Life is a journey - this is mine. Wednesday, February 17, 2010. Of all the things. Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.". When I was in my early 20's and starting in the corporate world, a forty-something co-worker had a poster with that quote on it. I thought it was funny in a tounge-in-cheek kind of way. I'm not laughing anymore. I feel like I've regressed a number of years and have all but lost the ability to think. I recall that saying now and can only nod in reluctant acceptance.
