Photographs of Spain

Sunday, February 19, 2017. The Port of Almería. I frequently drive to Almería from my hometown of Roquetas de Mar. Approaching the city from the west, the first glimpse I get is a dramatic view of the town with the magnificent Alcazaba on the mountainside on the left and the port on the right. Most days, in this part of Spain, the sun shines and so I can appreciate how the city of Almería got its name - it was the Arabs that called it al-Mariyah, meaning 'Mirror of the Sea'. Photographs of Spain: March 2012

http://bovingtonphotosofspain.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, March 31, 2012. Soria - Procathedral of San Pedro. The Procathedral of San Pedro in Soria was built in the 12th century on the site of an old Augustine monastery, and was subsequently rebuilt in the 16th century in Renaissance style under the patronage of Bishop Acosta. It has a Plateresque façade and three Gothic naves. Its cloisters are quite special - so much so - that they have been declared a National Monument. Http:/ commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Zarateman. Tuesday, February 28, 2012. Granada is a city in the autonomous region of Andalucía, situated at the foot of the Sierra Nevada. It is one of the great cities of Spain if not the World. It is a city where both Moorish and Christian history is visible in art and architecture. Moorish Granada is exemplified by the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of the Alhambra, the Generalife and the Albaicín district whilst the Capilla Real and the Cathedral represent Christian Granada. Tuesday, June 25, 2013. La noche de San Juan 23 Junio 2013, Roquetas de Mar. On the night of San Juan, 23 June, the people of Spain commemorate the Summer Solstice by lighting bonfires and fireworks. The celebrations are of pagan origin. One of the rituals is to leap over the fires, which allegedly brings good luck for the rest of the year. On this particular night, there was a full moon and a particularly larger one than normal. The Moon over Roquetas. More blogs by Robert Bovington. A grumpy old man in.

Photographs of Spain: Almería Cathedral

http://bovingtonphotosofspain.blogspot.com/2013/07/almeria-cathedral.html

Monday, July 1, 2013. The cathedral was built in the sixteenth century and was designed as a place of prayer and of refuge. This was because the shores of Almería were continually under attack from Turks and Berbers. This east facing façade of the 'Cathedral' has a relief of the Portocarro sun, the symbol of the city.
