A writing teacher enters the millenium. Friday, September 26, 2003. What can be more beautiful than sharing a dinosaur in the clouds? I'm stunned by the pleasure of that. I saw a brontosaurus. I pointed it out to a student I passed on the sidewalk. The brontosaurus seemed happy to be itself, for a few seconds, before it morphed into a nameless mass of darker cloud and then disappeared all together. That student seemed happy with it too. A writing teacher enters the millenium. Friday, March 28, 2003. I was witty when I was a boy. I played vile verses. With my violin mouth. Then I in grew into a cello. And the vileness smoothed into. Mellifluous baritone gravity,. And I studied and studied and practiced and practiced until. I grew truly bass. Posted by Mark at 1:11 PM. Links to this post. Monday, March 24, 2003. A writing teacher enters the millenium. Monday, October 06, 2003. I don’t know how many times I’ve read pieces bemoaning what young people are coming to these days. I read them thirty years ago, twenty, ten. Now people are worried that modern American 18 to 20 year olds know Madonna but not Kate Smith. I can’t say that worries me; popular culture is of the present. Madonna’s alive; the worthy and formidable Kate passed on some years ago. Are my enthusiasms getting away with me? A writing teacher enters the millenium. Thursday, April 27, 2006. The day I came home to find that my wife had moved out, taking the dog and some furniture with her, began a period of unparalleled grief. Shock, sorrow, guilt, regret, grief. I've looked at my brother's and my father's corpses and not felt such pain. Working through that brought me some clarity and roesolve. I'm tired of being discarded. I don't want to do that to anyone else, either. No revenge. No woman hating. Posted by Mark at 1:19 PM.

A writing teacher enters the millenium. Monday, February 27, 2006. Over the weekend I went to International Falls with a group of members of the St. Cloud Elks Lodge, where I participated in a curling bonspiel. None of us had ever curled before. We won the first game, got thoroughly drubbed in the two following. I came back with a world class allergy attack. I don't think my nose liked the curling rink. Posted by Mark at 6:18 AM. A writing teacher enters the millenium. Thursday, March 30, 2006. The end of March means spring is inevitable. Randy is dead of ruined kidney, then rotten lung, then thirty-five years friendship gone, three months silent. No rites of spring sing in mud season, fitting mud damping sounds, muting music of spring melt. Posted by Mark at 1:21 PM. Links to this post. Wednesday, March 29, 2006. The arts reveal us. A writing teacher enters the millenium. Saturday, December 31, 2005. I was married on this date twelve years ago. In a few days I'll have been divorced for one year. It startled me to realize these things just a few minutes ago. My marriage is fading from my day to day consciousness. This is far better than the agony when the divorce was still a shock and hard to believe. Happy New Year to anyone who happens on this blog. I'm here to give witness: living can get better. A writing teacher enters the millenium. Tuesday, January 31, 2006. The emperor of Thief River Falls, Kurt the Great, envies prospective teachers' idealism. I envy them the careers they have in front of them, if they so choose. Idealism can be refreshed, regardless of age; youth can't. That's why I envy the young teacher, especially the one who hasn't even started yet. What pleasure they will have early, and then what balanced professional excellence they can strive for later.
