Where's Runnicles: Waiting for Godot at the Barbican, or, An Outstanding Evening
http://www.wheresrunnicles.com/2015/06/waiting-for-godot-at-barbican-or.html
Sunday, 7 June 2015. Waiting for Godot at the Barbican, or, An Outstanding Evening. Posted by Finn Pollard. Owing to the Edinburgh International Festival in recent years I'd already discovered, contrary to what I'd expected, that I enjoy Beckett on stage. It was primarily for that reason that I booked to see Waiting for Godot. Much of the evening is gloriously funny (I don't think I've laughed so much at a performance since the National's One Man Two Governors. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). As well...

Where's Runnicles: EIF 2015 – The Last Hotel, or, In the Shadow of John Adams
http://www.wheresrunnicles.com/2015/08/eif-2015-last-hotel-or-in-shadow-of.html
Thursday, 13 August 2015. EIF 2015 – The Last Hotel, or, In the Shadow of John Adams. Posted by Finn Pollard. A great work, doesn't wholly get past this) and Dennehy and Walsh fail to do this. The work itself is also odd. The subject matter concerns an English husband and wife who have travelled to this run down Irish hotel in order to assist an Irish woman to commit suicide. My experience of Enda Walsh's writing previously was mixed. I found Misterman. Quite powerful and Ballyturk. We take pride in offe...

Where's Runnicles: Oresteia at the Almeida, or, Something of a Trial for All Concerned
http://www.wheresrunnicles.com/2015/06/oresteia-at-almeida-or-something-of.html
Sunday, 7 June 2015. Oresteia at the Almeida, or, Something of a Trial for All Concerned. Posted by Finn Pollard. Note: This is a review of a preview performance on Wednesday 3rd June 2015. The Press Night took place on Friday 5th June 2015. The staging is also uneven. The set is spare – white table and benches, a corridor between two sets of sliding doors (which can be rendered opaque or see-through depending on requirements) and beyond that a third area containing the bath. Icke's use of ...I rather wo...

Where's Runnicles: Antigone at the Barbican, or Solid Not Special

Sunday, 15 March 2015. Antigone at the Barbican, or Solid Not Special. Posted by Finn Pollard. Note: This is a rather belated review of the performance on Sunday 8th March 2015. Usually I would not post something so delayed, but because we have a particular interest in the Edinburgh Festival and this travels there later in the year I wanted to record my thoughts despite the delay. Late this month I'll finally get round to seeing Ivo van Hove's production of A View from the Bridge. A blog founded by broth...

Where's Runnicles: EIF 2015 – The Encounter, or, A Flawed Experiment
http://www.wheresrunnicles.com/2015/08/eif-2015-encounter-or-flawed-experiment.html
Monday, 10 August 2015. EIF 2015 – The Encounter, or, A Flawed Experiment. Posted by Finn Pollard. Certain aspects of this show are highly impressive – the technical sophistication, and Simon McBurney's performance. However, they are weakened by others – the script, and the degree to which I personally felt successfully immersed. As a result I was not as convinced as others by the show and, in particular, I felt emotionally distant from much of it. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A blog founded by br...

Where's Runnicles: Temple at the Donmar, or, What does God require of us?

Sunday, 26 July 2015. Temple at the Donmar, or, What does God require of us? Posted by Finn Pollard. This is a powerful evening in the theatre and certainly deserves further life beyond its Donmar run (though it's also the kind of show that I suspect is unlikely to get it). It is also a reminder of the considerable talents of two regulars of Hytner's National whom Rufus Norris has so far chosen not to summon to his aid. Hopefully they will be back there soon. Sunday, 17 May 2015. The Pirates of Penzance at ENO, or, An Un-Advertised Concert Performance. Posted by Finn Pollard. For years now (and indeed again next season) ENO has relied on Jonathan Miller's venerable Mikado. As a reliable revival. How the management must have hoped that hiring Mike Leigh on the back of Topsy-Turvy. To direct Pirates of Penzance. Would furnish them with an alternative such show. But it was not to be. 29 May 2015 at 11:45. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A blog founded by bro...

Sunday, 9 August 2015. EIF 2015 – The Opening Concerts, or, Includes A Blazing Performance from the Home Team. Posted by Finn Pollard. Before that, the first half gave us three Brahms choral works in partnership with the Edinburgh Festival Chorus: the Gesang der Parzen. The orchestral version of the Liebeslieder Walzer. Collectively these made for a solid, but not wildly exciting appetiser. The Walzer. Where they found a wonderful, quiet air of mystery. Earlier in the day I was also glad to have caught t...

Friday, 24 July 2015. Radio 3 broadcasts from the 2015 Edinburgh International Festival. Posted by Tam Pollard. In general, I'm not a fan of blog posts that just copy and paste press releases, but since I can't see this information on either the Edinburgh Festival. Websites, I'll make an exception. Here are details of the BBC Radio 3. Broadcasts from this year's Edinburgh International Festival. As usual, the evening concerts are deferred until September due to the small matter of the Proms. 11 Aug ̵...
