Book Group of One. Too cranky for the real thing. To Marry an English Lord. I spend most of my time writing and reading. Most recent publications: the reissue of "To Marry an English Lord,"one of the inspirations for "Downton Abbey," and the historical novel "Leaving Van Gogh." I am too cranky to belong to a book group but I love the book-blogging community. Hermione Ranfurly, “To War with Whitaker”. April 5, 2016. I’ve read a lot since then — I know you have, too — and guess what? November 18, 2014.

Book Group of One. Too cranky for the real thing. To Marry an English Lord. To Marry an English Lord. Back in the 1980s my friend Gail MacColl and I were reading a lot of Edith Wharton. Clearly my tastes have been pretty stable over the years). I believe it was Gail who suggested there might be a nonfiction book to be written about all those rich American women who married European aristocrats. Think of it:. Portrait of a Lady’s. The Golden Bowl’s. Maggie Verver, Millie Theale from. The Wings of the Dove.

Book Group of One. Too cranky for the real thing. To Marry an English Lord. Tana French, “The Secret Place”. Daniel James Brown, “The Boys in the Boat” →. Lee Child, “Personal”. September 11, 2014. Apparently deep in the shadiest corners of the U.S. Army there is a very old and neglected general named O’Grady who refers to Jack Reacher as “Sherlock Homeless.”. Which just goes to remind all of us that one of Lee Child’s. Unsung charms is his sense of humor. The amazing thing is that Child. I spend most of...

Book Group of One. Too cranky for the real thing. To Marry an English Lord. Lee Child, “Personal”. Diana Gabaldon, “Outlander” →. Daniel James Brown, “The Boys in the Boat”. November 3, 2014. If I say that. The Boys in the Boat. Only with humans, and on water, I mean no disrespect. How could I? Endows it with total legitimacy. You’d have to be a terrible cynic not to be touched by it. The boys — courtesy husky crew.com. Look, we know from the start they’re going to win, right? Task is to provide the conf...

Book Group of One. Too cranky for the real thing. To Marry an English Lord. Julia Spencer-Fleming, “One Was a Soldier”. Patrick Leigh Fermor, “Between the Woods and the Water” →. Asti Hustvedt, “Medical Muses”. July 11, 2011. One of the most fascinating areas of research for. Was the treatment of mental illness in 19th-century France. Since the novel is set in 1890, it’s natural that I came across the titanic figure of that era, Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot. I even wrote him into. OK, are you ready? Even brin...

A guide to good and bad reading experiences created by Ken and his reading buddies. And tell a little bit of the world what you think. Big books from a small country. Wrote both of these books by telling two stories: one from the past (that activates Department Q) and one from the present (which brings Mørck into conflict with the bosses who exiled him to the basement offices of Q). While reading, I imagine Adler-Olsen. Hey, and not one word about present or past tenses, until now. Department Q is assign...

A guide to good and bad reading experiences created by Ken and his reading buddies. And tell a little bit of the world what you think. Revisiting a long-admired author. Long ago, just after Bill Clinton had been elected president, he called Walter Mosley. One of his favorite authors. I remember thinking, "Walter who? Then I went out and got a copy of Devil in a Blue Dress. I was hooked and read many more of his books. Then Mosley. Spoiled me in 1997 by writing Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned. Story ...

A guide to good and bad reading experiences created by Ken and his reading buddies. And tell a little bit of the world what you think. Familiar author, new story. I have four books sitting next to my desk that I've read and haven't written about. All of them were written by authors whose earlier books I'm familiar with. All of them were at least good. Should I do more than make a list of them? Well, of course. The top of the pile is The Spider's Web. St Stephen's parish (the model for Coel's church).

A guide to good and bad reading experiences created by Ken and his reading buddies. And tell a little bit of the world what you think. No procrastination, this time. It's been over 40 years since I read any Dostoyevsky, but I had flashbacks last night while reading Karin Fossum's. Someone at NPR said a Fossum. Mystery is "equal parts whodunit, heart-thumper and creep show." Fossum. Says they are “small, quiet stories.”. Well, Bad Intentions. Posted by Ken Wedding. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

A guide to good and bad reading experiences created by Ken and his reading buddies. And tell a little bit of the world what you think. Better late than never? Once again, I have procrastinated about writing things about books I've read. The books have piled up on my desk and my dresser. Why, oh why? I have no answer. Stories so interesting. The new book is The Long Way Home. In the book that preceded The Long Way Home. The great detective cracked a major corruption case that involved the highest levels o...

A guide to good and bad reading experiences created by Ken and his reading buddies. And tell a little bit of the world what you think. Seriously, ignore this. Not the book. Ignore my review. The book is Reginald Hill's. It's been so long since I read it, I have only the vaguest memories of the story. I read the reviews and still don't recall much of the plot. If I finished this 500-page tome, it must have been readable. Was it great? In The New York Times. In The Washington Times. In The Sunday Express.

A guide to good and bad reading experiences created by Ken and his reading buddies. And tell a little bit of the world what you think. Traveling in another's mind. Little book, Books and Island in Ojibwe Country. Didn't remind me of Dostoyevsky. It reminded me of Malcolm X's account of his pilgrimage to Mecca. It wasn't so much the enlightenment of the travel as the sense of sacredness and the repetition of ritual that made me think of the journey to a far away desert place. Mishipzheu on a cliff face.

A guide to good and bad reading experiences created by Ken and his reading buddies. And tell a little bit of the world what you think. A few years ago, I invented an Improbability Award for books whose plots contained unlikely or wishful events. My inspiration for this was the spaceship Douglas Adams created in The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I think I have to hand out an Improbability Award in the nth degree to Steve Hamilton. For The Lock Artist. Adams' Heart of Gold. But the whole story and all t...

Walking Backwards
Tuesday, 20 January 2009. In pursuit of the Cotswold Way. Outside the Electric Theatre we were fascinated to see an "honesty box" Apparently all you had to do to reserve tickets for "Mama Mia" was to put your name and number on a card and place it in the box. Now surely, any less than honest avid "Abba" fans, desperate to get a seat would remove all but their own cards? Or is that just me and my suspicious mind? Was this place really as delightfully quaint as it appeared to be? With three long tables pus...
