You'll know where you are). Guatemalan Slang - Vol. 1. Textbook Spanish is just the tip of the iceberg. The fun really starts when you get into the slang. The literal translations of these sayings can be hilarious. (To be of bad fleas? Luckily, the folks at www.xelawho.com. Have posted a handy guide to Guatemalan slang and sayings. I'll be re-posting them here for your viewing pleasure. Estar de malas pulgas. To be of bad fleas. To be in a bad mood. Buscar pelos en la sopa. To look for hairs in the soup.

You'll know where you are). Over the holidays, my friend D and I decided to get serious about this photography business. So we entered into a friendly competition: twice per month we'll be traipsing about town seeing who can take the best shots. I'm not totally clear on who serves as the judge for this competition. I'm hoping it's Nicole, because that give me a sporting chance. D already has quite a portfolio, so if it really is just a question of pure skill, I'm screwed. Zap Brannigan, I'm eyeing you.

In a 3-month selection process for a job with the American Bar Association's Rule of Law Initiative. And people, the ABA is an association of lawyers, OK? So what does she do? Um lawyering, duh. Really, I have no idea. She can't do lawyering because she's not a lawyer, so I think she just. um. oh, just go check out the website. Fatima Water Project Update. My host family in Fatima.

Motorways and Tramlines: May 2007
http://motorwaysandtramlines.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html
You'll know where you are). After sharing a great breakfast of French toast with strawberries with our friend Dave, Nicole and I hopped in the car for a short trip. This weekend's destination was the Antietam battlefield. Let me tell you, it sure felt weird to be enjoying a pleasant walk on a sunny day through fields where more than 20,000 people had been killed or maimed in a single day. I don't know what else to say about that. That's a sizable advantage. But check out the final tally. Now we're back h...

Motorways and Tramlines: The Todos Santos Horse Race - 11.1.06

You'll know where you are). The Todos Santos Horse Race - 11.1.06. Looking back on the Todos Santos horse race – by far one of the most notable events during my time in Guatemala – I still waffle between being completely amused by it and extremely saddened. After more than a year, I’ve finally given up on trying to resolve those two sentiments. With that behind me, I was able to patch up the essay I wrote about that day. Check out the video I took of the crazy spectacle.). The marimba players were tucked...

Motorways and Tramlines: Marie and Benedice - 11.20.06
http://motorwaysandtramlines.blogspot.com/2008/02/marie-and-benedice-112006.html
You'll know where you are). Marie and Benedice - 11.20.06. Another Guatemala post I've been working on over the last year. My host family this week includes 2 granddaughters: Marie, age 4, and Benedice, age 5. Technically, the girls live next door, but they always join me when I come for meals at their grandmother's house. Every morning, they sit next to me as I eat my beans and eggs and tortillas. They’ve finished their breakfast long before I'm awake and so they just watch as I eat. It works every time.

You'll know where you are). Heritage = Pork Rinds Lawn Mowers Dragon? Shenandoah valley again. Man, do I love that place. So THIS go 'round brought us to the Page County Heritage Festival. Has anybody else noticed that "celebrate heritage" has somehow come to mean "line up your old tractors"? Page county has gone a wee further, including not only old tractors, but also old riding lawnmowers. Not that I can mock that too much. I really like the old machines. Check out this beauty. Neither Here Nor There.
