Civic Design Democracy is a design problem. Can the perfect ballot be designed? We think so. Starting here. Good design in elections means that voters can reliably and accurately express their intent. But voting goes beyond the ballot. Voters want to know what’s on the ballot ahead of time, and what to expect at the polling place, too. With the support of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. You can view the Field Guides online or download PDFs of the Field Guides for FREE. Redish and Assoc...

Civic Design Democracy is a design problem. Day in the life of a poll worker – November 2014. 8211; by Whitney Quesenbery. This Election Day, I was in a new polling place in a largely rural township in Central New Jersey. Elections out here are usually sedate affairs, with friends and neighbors chatting, and the same poll workers year after year. Almost boring. Except when a local election heats up. This year, the election hotspot was the 2 seats on the Township Committee. In a project that spanned 19 po...

Did I ever spew my theory of project management tools at you? They are nearly all good and bad, depending on the type of project, type. Of people, nature of use, yada yada yada… In the end, I truly believe a human. Needs to be the nexus. Hopefully, that human would be naturally good at using (and relating to) any of those tools, without having a focus/need to use any them, per se. And yes, I know this sounds problematic, but I’ve never seen a tool that everyone. Unless it is used correctly. Yeah, me too.

On unicorns (and other myths). There’s been a lot of talk about unicorns. Lately, and it hasn’t all been from stoners trippin’ out on double rainbows. Unicorn. Has become the new. But, unlike those terms, unicorn. Is also bandied around by people mocking the notion. It’s been used as an epithet. And, since unicorns. Are in fact mythical creatures, it’s easy to turn the metaphor on its head and sound witty. Has become an epithet. Should everyone try to be (or hire) a unicorn. But why quest after a unicorn.

The New Job Requirements ∞ Sketching in Code

The New Job Requirements. I recently dug up this “job requirements” email, which I wrote after a particularly harrowing experience with someone I was expected to manage. You must be able to piece together more than two sentences at a time. Specifically, you must understand how to communicate without bullet-points. Ability to ask questions. If you don’t understand something – whether it is the material at hand, or simply what is expected of you – ASK! Ability to say, “No.”. Think about and solve their pro...

Thoughts on communication, usability, accessibility, and whatever. Getting at the core of UX – UX Camp CPH 2015. I was quite eager to hear the opening keynote for Day 2 of UX Camp CPH. Ida Aalen had flown down from Netlife Research in Norway to talk about the Core Model and share experiences in using it at the Norwegian Cancer Society, Telenor, and the Norwegian Blind Society. I really loved Thomas’ talk the previous evening. And follow her on Twitter: @IdaAa. I’m a fan! The Core Model at UX Camp CPH 2014.

Civic Designing - Connecting Voters with the Government
Connecting Voters with the Government. Things to Watch in the New Jersey Governor’s Race. November 7, 2017. Notwithstanding the governor’s race between Democrat Phil Murphy and Republican Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, every one of the 120 seats in the state Legislature is up for re-election. Murphy is intensely favored to win, yet here’s what else to watch for to get a feeling of how things could play out in Trenton throughout the following quite a while. Could Trump-style battling work in New Jersey? The base ...
