Indications for having a colonoscopy:. 1 To exclude bowel cancer. 2 To detect bowel polyps early and remove them at a benign stage. 3 To investigate other causes of abdominal pain, bleeding, change in bowel action etc. Biopsies can be taken for histology. Most polyps can be removed and treated at the same time.
