What we might have to do to check learning has happened. Part II – manyanaed

Education, training, coaching, thinking and …. What we might have to do to check learning has happened. Part II. Learning: When tested can reproduce; when tested later can reproduce; when tested in a new context (same domain) can reproduce. I am trying to sort out the issue we have where performance is not the kind of evidence of learning we previously may have thought is was. Part 1 is a blog. The more they think, the better the learning. Someone quotable must have said something like that, surely!

I thought I’d make a list – manyanaed
https://manyanaed.wordpress.com/2015/10/04/i-thought-id-make-a-list
Education, training, coaching, thinking and …. I thought I’d make a list. Prompted by a blog post. By @learningspy I thought I would write a list, in order of importance, to define my purpose for education. So my ordered list would be:. A fairly traditional curriculum with a fairly standard organisational structure. High academic outcomes, using a value added measure. Annual improvement in these outcomes. Positive staff who improve annually. A positive student atmosphere. October 4, 2015. Create a free w...

I hear and I forget – that thing! – manyanaed
https://manyanaed.wordpress.com/2015/12/28/i-hear-and-i-forget-that-thing
Education, training, coaching, thinking and …. I hear and I forget – that thing! This quote may be from Confucius although it is sometimes attributed to others. It is, though, at best misleading and used to justify activity rather than what actually needs to be actualised for learning. To learn we need to think. The more we think and the different ways in which we think about something is the clue to securing a memory. It would be better written as:. I see and think about what I have seen and I learn.

Flat Earth – really!!! – manyanaed
https://manyanaed.wordpress.com/2016/06/11/flat-earth-really
Education, training, coaching, thinking and …. Flat Earth – really! How does one get to believe and maintain a belief in the flat earth? There seem to be three strands. Supporting ‘evidence’ in any one of these three strands seems to cement the flat earthers’ belief set. The first is based on the Old Testament. Despite there being. The four corners of the earth. The second belief is that there is a powerful, world wide set of groups, Freemasons, Knights Templar and others who are actively manipulating th...

Education, training, coaching, thinking and …. You can’t give advice. You can’t give advice. Let’s imagine that one of the criticisms is about needing to use more groupwork. You may or may not think groupwork is a fundamentally effective strategy or not. This is not about whether a particular method works or not; works or not for the particular context or content being worked on by your class. The best the feedback discussion can ever do, and should aim to do, is to leave the teacher with some thoughts a...

To Teach or to Elicit – manyanaed
https://manyanaed.wordpress.com/2015/11/22/to-teach-or-to-elicit
Education, training, coaching, thinking and …. To Teach or to Elicit. This post could well have been about the illusion of learning within a group. I’ll let you work out why that might be. But it was inspired by this blog. About whether to teach or to elicit understanding of a poem and is about elicit or tell. So the process of discovery may have worked for that one child but the other 29 are being taught the answer! The second reason for some teachers not wanting to tell a child what the poem means, as ...

Education, training, coaching, thinking and …. Should children make posters? Twitter strikes again. It is very difficult to be subtle on Twitter and that may be why blogs are so useful. An idea gets discussed in 140 character bites and it creates more questions than answers. It is also not, IMO, valid to suggest that a particular activity *can* develop insert whatever you think the activity develops particular knowledge and skills that justifies the use of that technique. Don’t justify the use of a...
