Go Build a House: August 2009
http://gobuildahouse.blogspot.com/2009_08_01_archive.html
Saturday, August 22, 2009. Sheets were delivered and stored in the garage. Ceiling lining went up on the first day. Plasterer busy at work. Both of the plasterers appeared on an episode of 'The New Inventors' last year. They now charge extra for having their photos taken. We sound-insulated selected internal walls. The ground floor plaster has been stopped up and only needs the cornice to finish off. It's a messy job. To the mayhem he caused. This is the room over the garage. And so is this. Most of my n...

Go Build a House: April 2009
http://gobuildahouse.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, April 26, 2009. This week saw the arrival of our specialist roofing contractor and the beginning of our shingle roof. The facade or our house is reminiscent of the Californian Bungalow style. This style coupled with our chosen attic. Roof form lends itself to a shingle roofing system. The problem here is that a slate roof is prohibitively. This type of roofing is used on over 80% of houses in North America but not even 1% here in Australia. Supplies for the roofing. 12mm tongue. Up of the underlay.

The wall wrap has been installed, the windows are in and the brickwork has begun at the rear of the house. The box bay window was delivered this week after a long wait. This particular window is double glazed. And also made with low-E glass. The window faces west so the 'low emission. Glass emits light but blocks radiation. This is the arched window in my future office. Wednesday, May 20, 2009. A snapshot of t...

Go Build a House: January 2010
http://gobuildahouse.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Thursday, January 21, 2010. Yes, I'm still here. Needless to say, I'm not a good blogger. Anyway, I'm back to attempt an update on proceedings. I spent many late nights at the house trying to get things done and by doing so I had the privilege. This is how the front looks at the moment. I can't wait to finish off the facade with the stonework, steps and paving but the inside jobs are taking priority at the moment. I also need to fit the gable vent over the portico. Not that we've actually even thought ab...

Go Build a House: February 2009
http://gobuildahouse.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
Friday, February 20, 2009. The engineer had a look at the soil and gave us the go-ahead. No need for another soil report. According to regulations the footing depth can decrease by one third if the foundation is rocky. So the engineer's advice was, "See how you go". So, away we went. Site fenncing erected, hurdles in place to mark out the position of the house and machines on the job to dig the footings. Now, here's a lovely straight, perfectly formed trench in our rock-free soil! This is a nice round ho...
