Currently we have two communities in Dar es Salaam. The first is at Maji Matitu. Near Charambe in Temeke district which houses the sisters involved in the local apostolates there and caters for those young women who come to share our life before committing themselves to the noviciate. Our Mission as Christian Religious is to help the local community of which we are a part. The main thrust of our work is in the fields of education. In order to help us be most effective in choosing how and where we would minister, it has always been our policy to talk to the community first and listen to their needs. Our work in education takes us beyond plain teaching into helping to provide educational facilities in co-operation with the Church, local government and other agencies. LSU Highgate, UK.

Formation

We have now reached a time when we have the resources to train our own young women in Tanzania. To our joy we have been granted permission to open our own Novitiate in Tanzania, to serve the needs of East Africa, and our new Novitiate building at Dundani is now complete. The first novice guide and her two novices took possession of the building in January 2016, and the process of formation is going ahead. Plans are in place for a market garden and poultry project in the extensive grounds. LSU Highgate, UK.

A brief history

Fr Jean Baptist loved to contemplate the union of the hearts of Jesus and Mary in the Incarnation and this led to our name which has special significance. Our religious symbol means that our consecration identifies us with the cross. The hearts of Jesus and Mary engraved on the cross remind us of the union to which we are called. The Holy Union Sisters in Tanzania work with local people in the fields of education and social/family welfare. Our growing community of sisters is continually extending the scope of its work, through projects such as Debrabant Secondary School, COBET educational provision for special needs childen and Matumaini Centre for disabled children and their parents. Outreach

Many families come to us with problems and often they want a listening ear and possibly advice. Life is hard here and there is no medical or social welfare available. We help as we can with food, encouragement and medical or financial help in emergencies. Many teachers canot afford their own house but with the help of Habitat and other donors as well as ourselves we have been able to build low cost housing for some 42 families on two sites, at Saku and Chamasi. Kindergarten

In 2000 we were instrumental in starting a nursery school at Maji Matitu for 70 children. The school is attached to the local Primary School. It continues to thrive and now teaches 170 pupils in 2 shifts. In response to numerous requests by local parents, in 2004 we opened a private Montessori Kindergarten. That school has now expanded to 3 classrooms and caters for 130 children. Morning break. A beaker of uji (maize porridge) is the only meal many of these children will see today. LSU Highgate, UK.

Debrabant School

The school was opened in 2008. Since then four groups of 4th years have graduated and in 2016 the first Form VI graduation took place. The magnificent School Hall, with room for more than 1,000 students, is also made available for local community events. The school aims to give the students the best all round education.
