During 1816, the Anatomy school of Great Marlborough Street would advertise their dissections of the human body every Thursday, as usual . These would be attended by medical students who needed the experience as part of their medical degree. Such human bodies were hard to come by; apart from the corpses of executed murderers; there was no other legal source. Family and relatives realised that time was the key; a speedy...

July 15, 2015. July 15, 2015. The Magna Carta-a version for everybody in 1816. Charles James Fox still holding on tight to English liberties. The simplicity of the document was admired by some.Earl Stanhope asked the Commons to revise statute law to have simpler headings-like the Magna Charta. It seems from the debates that it was the structure of the document rather than the content that he admired so much. There is little evidence thought the reports of 1816 that many people had read it. However, both ...

August 5, 2015. April 27, 2016. Two body snatchers- Ben Crouch and Joseph Naples. Two Body Snatchers Ben Crouch and Joseph Naples. William Millard claimed complete ignorance of the gang but he was lying. He was a major supplier of bodies to Sir Astley Cooper, President of the Royal College of Surgeons and the gang knew it. The gang also had links with Sir Astley himself and the attack on William was a proxy warning to a man too eminent for them to threaten directly. The authorities’ mistake was to put hi...

New Money 1816 – About1816
https://about1816.wordpress.com/2015/04/26/new-money-1816
April 26, 2015. May 9, 2015. You could sell good quality gold and silver coins when the intrinsic value of the metal was higher than the face value of the coin. Notice the word “old”. Due to silver’s softness, it could also be sweated-placed in a bag with other coins, shaken vigorously and the dust caused by the friction collected and sold. A Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue (1811) attributed this practice to Jews- an interesting example of the enduring anti-Semitic prejudices. May 9, 2015 at 8:07 pm.

October 14, 2016. October 14, 2016. Women’s rights and rape; a breakthrough in 1811 and a lesson for 2016? Two hundred years ago, rape was a capital crime and dealt with very severely. However, convictions were rare because of the nature of the questions that the women could be asked and the likelihood, as in other cases, that witnesses would be paid to defame those giving evidence. This second piece of evidence was ruled inadmissible and Harriet’s evidence stood. The new rule (called Hodgson) was ex...

April 15, 2015. July 15, 2015. Demanding Satisfaction; duelling in 1816. Duelling was still happening in 1816. It was practised among a much broader social class than a century earlier, had no fixed rules and was not really regarded as a honourable thing to do, except by those doing it, and sometimes not even then. It was never legal in Scotland. But is still continued in our late Regency period. He took a day to locate Adolphus; it seemed that he may have left for France after the letter was dispatched&#...
