Doing Science With Your Kids

Doing Science With Your Kids. On Raspberries and “Failure”. May 4, 2015. I have a black thumb. Although I like planting things, maintaining the order in the garden, and harvesting the strawberries the squirrels haven’t eaten, I’m just not very good at remembering which things need pruning (and when), the types of soil and light that are best, and the over-wintering care, despite a large 3-ring binder of notes. Apparently, growing raspberry plants in this manner doesn’t work. Z said that our exp...But fai...

Baby’s First Experiment | Doing Science With Your Kids

https://doingsciencewithyourkids.wordpress.com/2014/08/12/babys-first-experiment

Doing Science With Your Kids. Baby’s First Experiment. August 12, 2014. This is the first time I’ve tried an “organized” experiment with Z, rather than noticing some happenstance thing. Z is 3 years old (hence the quotes around “organized”), and received this little “experiment set” for his birthday, so what better to do with it than to mix some vinegar and baking soda. The initial bubbles were pretty fun, but afterward was more interesting for me. How can you make it bubble again? Bubbles over the top.

Doing Science With Your Kids. I am a high school physics and math teacher by day and a father of a crazy curious 6 year old girl and a happy-go-lucky 4 year old boy. We enjoy playing outside, talking math. And investigating anything that piques our curiosity. Modeling Instruction, Standards Based Grading, Educational Technology). A daily, though that’s a bit optimistic, look at my classroom through photos). What Would Neil deGrasse Tyson Do? I am a research engineer in biomechanics. My mechanical eng...

Doing Science With Your Kids. Sick Day (With Yeast! February 3, 2015. What do you do while stuck at home with a sick three-year-old? Well, okay, I did the baking, but Z requested a science experiment. Who am I to pass that by? Because he so loved the baking soda and vinegar stuff, I gave Z some yeast, water, sugar, a funnel, cups, and balloons. First, we took a look at what yeast does with cold, warm, and hot water. The green balloon is cold, pink is warm, red is hot. In Z’s words, pink wins! On We Under...

Doing Science With Your Kids. Get Out of Their Way. June 27, 2014. Written by Casey Rutherford. A week or so ago this video of Neil deGrasse Tyson came across my twitter feed (the first minute is the most relevant);. Then yesterday she wanted to do an experiment with the rocks we have frozen in water in ice cube trays. (aside: Why do we have rocks frozen in ice cube trays, you ask? 8221;), but Melia was already onto the next thing. Which is fine, because it’s not about the result right now. Could a spide...

Doing Science With Your Kids. We Underestimate What Kids Can Do. July 18, 2014. Written by Casey Rutherford. I’ve been letting my 6 year old daughter play light bot. To my surprise, he sat there for 10 minutes without saying anything about it, so I came over, saw what was going on, and filmed this;. It’s about time we realize that kids can do far more than what we sometimes project on them. Baby’s First Experiment. We Underestimate What Kids Can Do" (1). Nerdy Science: July 2014

http://nerdybaby.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Everyday science for families with young children. Tuesday, July 29, 2014. Keeping critters out of gardens with a crop cage. A few months ago, I was 9 months pregnant, had just planted a garden. And then had a garden disaster. Where all of the leaves of our cucumber plants were chewed by a critter. The plants subsequently died. My husband took pity on me and purchased a few more cucumber plants and quickly built a crop cage out of PVC piping and leftover (affiliate link) protective netting. Felt and flee...

The Map is Not the Territory. The Math in Your Feet Blog Constructing an Understanding of Mathematics. Wednesday, August 27, 2014. What were you trying to do? Listening in to kids think while they're creating something new. Session I did with some 4th graders today:. Grader: I’m trying to get to not do the same pattern twice. Me: So not even the same color pattern? There’s like random colors across the top [ the warp. And what did you do the weft [ weaving across]. Me: …and then you started again. Me: Ca...

San Francisco is the greatest town. It is a little zany in some ways but the wonderful thing is that in this town, you can be what you want to be. It is open, transparent in ways that I've never seen. I literally "run" all over the City and love to make observations about our town. Tuesday, September 02, 2014. A Year of Doing Scary Things

A Year of Doing Scary Things. A year long project to try and conquer many things this year. One being to become a better writer. To the Wall Street Journal,. 8220;There are of course exceptions, but a careless young reader—or one who seeks out depravity—will find himself surrounded by images not of joy or beauty but of damage, brutality and losses of the most horrendous kinds. And go out drunk driving because a character did it. Nor do we read Macbeth. So many lives. Here are just a few examples:. These ...

A Belgian-American Family in Australia. A Belgian-American Family Living in Australia. Welcome to our Aussie web space! My name is Francie, and I along with my husband Johan, and our son JP, moved from the USA to Australia in July of 2012! This opportunity came suddenly and unexpectedly to us, and as we told everyone about our plans to move to Oz, we were met with a mixture of disbelief and excitement, and lots of questions! The questions range from whimsical to practical: Why are you moving to Australia?
