Don't sacrifice your desktop user yet. We all know the trends and what the data says. The world is going/gone mobile and as UX and design people, we need to move with this. And fast. But in this race to be 'mobile-first' there are a few casualties, one being the experience of desktop users. As everying is mobified or tabletised, the desktop experience is inheriting some of the new design habits, and not always for the best. Thomas Wendt captured an example of this:. People aren't stupid, your features are. When users adopt new tools and applications, they don't always utilise them in the way the product owner imagined. We know this from the many jaw-dropping observations that surface during our own user testing. But we can also see it when a friend attempts to use a service to achieve a task that it wasn't really meant for. Have a broadcast mode: you can send broadcast messages to a set of contacts. The worst kind of disappointment. It's one thing to make an offer available to a selected group of customers. It's another to suggest it's open to everyone but then only later stipulate terms. Virgin Media are great at this give-and-take-away. I came across this offer on their site which looked pretty compelling. You'll see there is no reference to contract requirements. In fact, as it's displayed in the logged-in part of the site, I'd assumed that this is a targeted offer. So I click on the offer.

Don't. Tell me. The score. Like other sports fans, I can be irrational when it comes to finding out scores before I want to. This happens often: I record a match on the Tivo to watch on delay. I turn on the TV just as it's ending (in realtime) to watch from the start. Stupidly, I've left the TV on the sports channel and before I can turn away, I've glimpsed the score. Ruined.
