Virtual Population Genetics Simulation (VPGsim). The plant lifecycle consists of an alternation between two generations: haploid gametophytes and diploid sporophytes. Studies of plant population genetics generally focus on the more visible sporophytes and ignore the gametophytes. This may be excusable for seed plants, where the gametophyte consists of a few short-lived cells within the pollen grain or buried within the ovary of the flower.
