Living simply in an over-complicated world. August 13, 2015 in Bakfiets. Bakfiets being a skip for the day. One of the jobs I’d been planning to do for some time was clearing out the cellar, in particular the smaller sized bikes which are lurking in every corner. Of course the appearance of Beautiful Daughter means the bikes need to remain in place for a while longer; not that I’m complaining, I hasten to add. Expatriate life is full of glamour. Living simply in an over-complicated world. August 7, 2015 in woodwork. It is hotter here than in Japan where my Beautiful Wife and family are, so hot in fact that I wore shorts yesterday. Conscious of my responsibilities to society I refrained from anything shorter than 3/4 length. Meanwhile, I’m getting lessons in woodcarving. When I helped build a stage. A couple of weeks ago, we agreed that in lieu of payment* I’d get some training in woodcarving from one of the artists. Kid in a sweet shop. Bike fac...

Nonetheless, I've been making progress as time and weather have allowed and in this respect, I think we've been quite lucky. The stain requires 40 degrees or above for application, so I've ...

Building a super-insulated Vermont home. Monday, January 30, 2012. Nancy at work. I was concerned the L would impede the passageway to the basement stairs, but its fine. The view outside is important and this arrangement works really well. Our bird feeder is outside the window on the right allowing for an easy glance over the computer. Sketches of the desk. We'll store the printer under the desk in a faux cabinet. View: In the yurt, she could glance just to her right and see the birds on the quince bush.

Building a super-insulated Vermont home. Thursday, December 5, 2013. The completed project. We're liking the effect of the lowered hood. The opening through the wall. I mentioned this during a presentation I recently made to the Super Insulation class at Yestermorrow Design/Build School. It was suggested by John, one of the instructors, that I really should complete this project because it has notable effects on home air quality. Just because I'm not aware of it doesn't mean its not there. Nance and I al...
