Purple Finches & Clifford E. Lee Nature Sanctuary | Edmonton Wildlife

https://edmontonwildlife.wordpress.com/2014/04/27/purple-finches-clifford-e-lee-nature-sanctuary

My Big Year – 2013. My Big Year – 2014. Last night Monikah and I photographed a beautiful wedding. Everything turned out beautifully, and today we relaxed. Which really means heading off into the wilds, birding. So first thing this morning, after coffee of course, which was more like noonish we walked over to my feeders. They are currently teaming with life and we spotted our first purple finches of the year. All in all it was a great day and here are a few of the bests from the day. April 27, 2014.

Birding Big Lake! | Edmonton Wildlife

My Big Year – 2013. My Big Year – 2014. Today Monikah and I went out to Big Lake in search of a great horned owl but came up short. It was a little bit disappointing but the birding was still good and we saw plenty of other fantastic animals. I didn’t get many good photos on this outing so I’ll be stealing some of Monikah’s for the blog post. Common Grackle, Photo by Monikah. Common Grackle, Photo by Monikah. 'Round the Pond: Connections

http://www.bloominghill.org/p/progress.html

There's always something blooming. Why are they surviving in Newfoundland? Who Will Lead the Future? My amazing high school is named after the very-much-alive Robert Bateman, famous envrionmental and landscape artist who taught there, MAJOR supporter of protecting wildlife, and promoter of allowing children to appreciate the wilderness as it is. Bateman has visited our school a few times; the last two times to speak to interested staff and students and hike with some at a special place. Posed in a forest...

Life in the Beaver Hills: August 2013

http://beaverhillslife.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Friday, August 30, 2013. A brief taste of Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan. Certainly one of the highlights of the summer was my August 11th overnight stopover in Grasslands National Park. In southernmost Saskatchewan. It was my first stop on an Edmonton-to-Kingston (and back) road adventure. And re-introduced populations of Swift Fox. Were hawking for insects at eye level along the main street. In the late afternoon I drove from Val Marie along the Ecotour Route. A dark phased Swainson's Hawk.

Life in the Beaver Hills: Golden Eagle over Elk Island National Park

http://beaverhillslife.blogspot.com/2014/01/golden-eagle-over-elk-island-national.html

Wednesday, January 15, 2014. Golden Eagle over Elk Island National Park. Martha and I took the dog out for some exercise on January 13th in Elk Island National Park and were thrilled to come upon a well-scavenged bison carcass attended by three Coyotes, five Common Ravens. And a dozen or so Black-billed Magpies. Perched about one hundred yards away was this juvenile Golden Eagle. Our first sighting of this species in the park where it's considered to be a rare spring-fall migrant. Ontario Birds and Herps.

'Round the Pond: What Kind of Oak?

http://www.bloominghill.org/2014/07/what-kind-of-oak.html

There's always something blooming. Wednesday, July 30, 2014. What Kind of Oak? JJS noticed one brave and lonely young oak peeking through the meadow wilds. With some careful concern, he provided a view to something more unique around here. What kind of oak is it though? I played around with the lighting in Photoshop to make it stand out. One result was a bubble-protected oak. What kind of oak? Click here to choose from the variety. Click here for more information and samples. Posted by from Lidia. A few ...

'Round the Pond: Window Hawk Guarding

http://www.bloominghill.org/2014/07/window-hawk-guarding.html

There's always something blooming. Wednesday, July 30, 2014. I couldn't find the hawk stickers and then thought that might be too much to block the view. I thought about making some easy copies of them. Instead, I got a plastic hawk last year to rest inside, looking out the window. That seemed to help until some more recent hard-knock thumps. JJS has now lifted the hawk high on a pole contraption he put together outside. Posted by from Lidia. The Guide to Not-For-Profit Governance. How to Read a Compass.
