There's always something blooming. August 24, 2014. Big, black, and beautiful, it flew over as we walked around the lake yesterday. Anhinga, a Cormorant. Common or Eastern Garter Snake. JJS says first time he's seen one in New York State. He thought maybe they were extinct. He had tried raising Cecropia moths in 2003. In Ontario and here at BH. Friday, August 30, 2013. A brief taste of Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan. Certainly one of the highlights of the summer was my August 11th overnight stopover in Grasslands National Park. In southernmost Saskatchewan. It was my first stop on an Edmonton-to-Kingston (and back) road adventure. And re-introduced populations of Swift Fox. Were hawking for insects at eye level along the main street. In the late afternoon I drove from Val Marie along the Ecotour Route. A dark phased Swainson's Hawk.

Wednesday, January 15, 2014. Golden Eagle over Elk Island National Park. Martha and I took the dog out for some exercise on January 13th in Elk Island National Park and were thrilled to come upon a well-scavenged bison carcass attended by three Coyotes, five Common Ravens. And a dozen or so Black-billed Magpies. Perched about one hundred yards away was this juvenile Golden Eagle. Our first sighting of this species in the park where it's considered to be a rare spring-fall migrant. Ontario Birds and Herps.

There's always something blooming. Wednesday, July 30, 2014. I couldn't find the hawk stickers and then thought that might be too much to block the view. I thought about making some easy copies of them. Instead, I got a plastic hawk last year to rest inside, looking out the window. That seemed to help until some more recent hard-knock thumps.
