The River North Esk rises near the Bore Stane high in the Pentland Hills above the North Esk Reservoir. The village grew at the end of the 18th century around the cotton weaving industry. The river flows through the estate of Penicuik House, a great landscaped park laid out from about 1700 by Sir John Clerk. Penicuik (the hill of the cuckoo) was the first of several towns to harness the power of the Esk for papermaking. At Auchendinny the beautiful Firth Viaduct carried the railway high over the river.

My job affords me little windows of opportunity to fish up and down the country and one of the best is opposite the village of Dornie on the shore/bank of Loch Long. Being sea loch's, as the tide recedes, Loch Long flows like a river under the Dornie Bridge and on into Loch Alsh. At other times of the tide it can be fairly stable.
