Fine Arts | The Great Islander
https://greatislander.ca/fine-arts
March 13, 2013. Tomorrow morning, I’m meeting with my university’s Dean of Fine Arts to discuss all of this. The facts are these: between 15 and 20 per cent of the Fine Arts faculty’s $3.9 million non-salary and non-permanent budget will have been cut when Concordia’s 2013-14 fiscal year begins on May 1. I had a thought after writing all of that. Last year, the provincial government here in Québec fined Concordia University. Where are our priorities, honestly?

January 14, 2013. A valuable recognition that leapt out at me the from flood of remembrances for the late Aaron Swartz:. I think he knew that the amazing platform provided by the Internet could only bring about real changes if people were willing to put them into action. That documents and data and records posted online would need to translate into action or impact offline.

February 16, 2012. Monologuist Mike Daisey is known to many for a recent episode. That chronicled his investigation into labour practices at Foxconn in Shenzhen, China. Now he plans to release a transcript of the monologue on which the episode was based:. 8220;The monologue will be released as a PDF, and it comes with very open licenses and you can perform it forever, without paying royalties, wherever you want,” Mr. Daisey said in a telephone interview. Daisey deserves a lot of credit for the increasing.

May 31, 2012. I wrote the following paragraphs on the métro from Place-Saint-Henri to Guy-Concordia station on Monday, March 12th, 2012. This was the start of the second week of the Fine Arts Student Alliance’s strike at Concordia University. It’s been rare for a single Theatre and Development class to go by without the discussion turning to ideas of community. We run the risk of wearing the term out[ 1], but in this area of study it can’t be avoided. These exuberant nightly gatherings of neighbours that...

February 8, 2012. On Monday, Canada’s Conservative government exercised the power of their majority and prevented Green Party leader Elizabeth May from rising in the House to pay tribute. Let us teach ourselves and others that politics can be not simply the art of the possible but that it can also be the art of the impossible, that is, the art of improving ourselves and the world. In its English translation by Tom Stoppard) — a wry, semi-autobiographical tale of a disaffected philosopher who locks ...

May 26, 2014. I’m sitting at home on my deadline day, checking off numbers as movers offload a truck the size of Summerville with 129 pieces of our life. Some of this stuff I haven’t seen in two and a half years. Come here, let me tune you up. There goes the red-lidded bin that I moved all my worldly possessions home from France in. That was 10 years ago, and everything I owned that was worth moving between continents fit in two 4-cubic ft containers. What is that strange, lumpy package? This entry was p...

Monthly Archives: April 2013. April 10, 2013. I had a baby a few weeks ago, so things have been all eat-sleep-diaper-laundry-repeat around here. Note. Was not on that list. Baby is five and a half weeks old, and I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve showered since she was born. 8230;or do I? Anyway, let me tell you a few things about motherhood 2.0. 1 Every baby is different. Not me. Sure, they. Alike, but the similarities end there. 2 Every labour is different. I know, right? Parade of belongings →. March 30, 2014. I didn’t figure out that not everyone could read music until I was in my twenties. Apparently it has taken until my thirties to figure the same about triathlons. I must remember that a triathlon to some is like Scuba diving to me. That is, no way no how. Give me a tri any day over underwater pressure and compressed air. Now THAT’s my kind of terrifying. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. Parade of belongings →. Leave your two cents here! Tomayto Tomahto →. March 23, 2014. I love to cook. I have a menu board in my kitchen which I fill out every weekend after finalizing our meal plan for the week. Seriously. You should try it. It makes grocery shopping and meal prepping so much easier and also healthier and also cheaper). I also made a honey-herbed chicken, which was bland. I know it’s bad when nobody goes for seconds. A week ago I made a terrible quinoa chicken broccoli casserole. Another waste of cheese! Tomayto Tomahto →. You are commen...
