Erbium, with its large magnetic dipole moment, offers an exciting opportunity to extend previous work in single-site imaging of quantum gases. The long-range, anisotropic, and tunable nature of the dipole force gives rise to new emergent phenomena and new ways of controlling the system parameters. With an erbium quantum gas microscope, we plan on studying aspects of magnetism, spin-orbit coupling, and novel phases of matter. Highly dipolar: 50x stronger dipole-dipole interaction than rubidium.
