July 22, 2010. Bike Mechanics: Finding a good one! Finding a good bike mechanic isn't easy, I should know, I spent the first 6 months of 2009 trying to find someone who would understand what I meant when something went wrong. When I speak mechanic it’s not exactly English and in everyday life I don't normally use words like, cranks, bottom bracket and head stem; heaven forbid I use the word cassette or derailleur. My theory on this is that mechanics like to know that they are needed. Regardless of ou...

November 24, 2010. RMGsports Electric Blue Women's Kit. RMGsports is a cycle clothing label in the making. Headed by Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist Rochelle Gilmore; she is the first to admit that she isn’t a designer. She has however, been able to convey her thoughts and ideas into a design that she was after, into an attractive cycling kit that is now available for both men and women. The electric blue colours are reprinted on the bib knicks and they make for an exciting design. For my first ride...

December 7, 2011. Junior World Champion Georgia Baker Explains! I'm in awe of 17-year-old Georgia Baker. Not because she's one of the few 2011 Junior World Champions on the track but because she went down in a criterium and knocked out five teeth. All this about six weeks before the World Championships. She then made it to the World Championships to win the Teams Pursuit and Silver in the Scratch. Georgia's got strength and character that you don't see in many women let alone 17-year-old girls! Georgia i...

June 5, 2010. Tuesday 4th May 2010. She has been on a bike since she was 13, and there is no doubt this girl from Tassie wants to dominate the next World Championships, the Commonwealth Games and 2012 Olympics. Belinda Goss has won bronze three years in a row at the World Championships and at just the slightest mention of the Rainbow Jersey her face lights up. It’s easy to see her eyes are firmly fixed on the Rainbow Jersey and Goss is one girl who has the focus to follow through. Melbourne is great, the...

June 26, 2010. Tour de France: How hard can it be? The Tour de France is the toughest road race, and cycling is the hardest sport in the world, just ask anyone whose attempted a 200km ride. No other sport in the world compares to riding a bicycle for 20 stages, except of course being dedicated enough to watch the entire tour… from Australia. We can all agree the riders do a mighty fine job. Though let’s not forget that they at least get to race in a time zone that they have adapted to. You’ll hear ...

August 27, 2010. You think you’re tough? Sharman Parr, 56 years old and has qualified for Kona Hawaii Ironman no less than five times and I haven’t even grazed the surface of her achievements and ability. Parr is leading the SheSpoke Cycle Wear team through the hottest, and hardest mountain bike race in the world; the Crocodile Trophy. Rowena Scott of Bicycles Network Australia (BNA) caught up with Sharman to find out exactly how tough this 56 year old power house really is. Parr: Pleased to achieve a fi...

March 31, 2011. Review: The Professional Retül Bike Fitting Concept. I knew my position wasn't entirely right before I stepped foot in Dr. Andrew Steel's Retül office at LSD Sports on St Kilda Road, Melbourne. I had transferred my position directly from an old bike to my new Felt AR4 and it just didn't have that feel of 'comfort'. Let's take a look at the measuring and fitting process:. We look at hip flexibility and I score well. Checking the shoulder positions, specifically the right one. The Retül web...

October 26, 2010. Matt de Neef, The Climbing Cyclist. The Climbing Cyclist, also known as Matt de Neef, is conquering Victoria's mountains; he has climbed Mt Hotham, he’s beaten Mt Baw Baw and he admits that Terry’s Avenue, Belgrave, almost had him heading to the bottom before he had even reached the top. Matt took time out to speak with Rowena Scott of Bicycles Network Australia (BNA) about pushing the barriers, making it to the top and that feeling that makes us want to keep on climbing. De Neef: I got...
