Pacific Grits: Father's Day - A Brief History
http://pacificgrits.blogspot.com/2011/06/fathers-day-brief-history.html
Better with butter and a little salt. Sunday, June 19, 2011. Father's Day - A Brief History. With Father's Day upon us it is important for fathers to remember how we, as an inferior societal subculture to mothers, got where we are. After all, Father's Day did not get off the ground until well after Mother's Day was established in the United States. Mart and Fred Meyer, grills began. Making a comeback in the mid-1990's. Father's Day became official in 1972, with a proclamation. Took me time to read all th...

Plenty Better to Do: May 2011
http://carynkirk.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
Plenty Better to Do. Friday, May 6, 2011. I was sitting here at my deak preparing for class and happened to notice, more than the page it was resting on, my hand. It reminded me of an alligator purse. I seriously can't believe how scaly and old it looks. I never thought I'd look old. Then I noticed the page it was resting on. Seriously, it happened to be a poem about the challenges of faith. How we run to God only because he is our last resort for comfort, not because He is good or reliable. Two Rs and TV.

Plenty Better to Do: January 2010

Plenty Better to Do. Friday, January 15, 2010. Bapu Ghandi said, 'All religions are true.' I just want to love God," I blurted out, and looked down, red in the face. I'm currently teaching the novel. To my Hammond freshmen - what a wonderful book! Isn't each worldview true in its own way? It seems to me that our culture has lost sight of a very important word:. In an effort to be nice to each other, to understand one another's points of view without prejudice, we've watered down what. Means I was watching.

Plenty Better to Do: Kayak Shenanigans
http://carynkirk.blogspot.com/2009/09/i-knew-it-was-over-before-i-even-went.html
Plenty Better to Do. Wednesday, September 16, 2009. I knew it was over before I even went under. The kayak had turned backwards, a rock leapt up behind me from beneath the white water, and I gave in. I think I heard the river gods laugh as I got a noseful of water. To tell you the truth, I was laughing too. What business did I have in a kayak anyway? The scene was the Nantahala River in North Carolina. The cast of characters? Todd R. Vick. Or is that skiing? October 15, 2009 at 5:08 AM. The Life of Pi.

Pacific Grits: Monday Cold with Jeff Bridges and Cocktail Umbrellas
http://pacificgrits.blogspot.com/2010/07/monday-cold-with-jeff-bridges-and.html
Better with butter and a little salt. Tuesday, December 28, 2010. Monday Cold with Jeff Bridges and Cocktail Umbrellas. AN UNPUBLISHED POST FROM JULY 26, 2010:. It is not uncommon for me to stay up late and rise at 5 AM after four hours sleep. Of course the downside to that practice is the much needed evening nap of an hour or so. Was cutting edge movie technology? And remember hanging out at the arcade with a pocket full of quarters, how cool that was? I awoke later that usual and dragged myself to the ...

Plenty Better to Do: South Carolina on My Mind
http://carynkirk.blogspot.com/2009/09/south-carolina.html
Plenty Better to Do. Thursday, September 10, 2009. South Carolina on My Mind. We are South Carolinians again. An odd day to announce this, considering everyone is currently reluctant to admit any connection with the state that gave us Joe Wilson's rude Congressional outburst and that guy who apparently had sex with his horse. I'm OK with sharing Carolina with a handful of famous idiots, so long as the beauty doesn't fade and the tea stays sweet. Makes me want to move there, too. Oh. wait. To Kill a Mocki...

http://carynkirk.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
Plenty Better to Do. Tuesday, April 13, 2010. Notes from the Nine-Year-Old. The other day while shopping: "I really love getting stuff. Granna and Papa are my secret weapon.". Tonight while tucking into bed: "I wonder if the demons are like the Stormtroopers. Maybe they don't want to work for the devil, but he made them, like Darth Vader did.". I shall reveal the answer after a couple of decent guesses. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Summer, hot and beautiful. View my complete profile. To Kill a Mockingbird.

Plenty Better to Do: August 2008
http://carynkirk.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
Plenty Better to Do. Thursday, August 28, 2008. I know there are those who dismiss such beliefs as happy talk. They claim that our insistence on something larger, something firmer and more honest in our public life is just a Trojan Horse for higher taxes and the abandonment of traditional values. ". But it doesn't have to be. I still really like the way this guy talks. And a classical allusion to boot! Tuesday, August 26, 2008. 3) I really feel a desperate need to see God's hand more clearly and concrete...
