The English Lake District. For most visitors the lakes are approached from the M6 motorway, the northern approach being via Penrith along the A66. From there one can turn south to visit Ullswater, Thirlmere, Derwent Water, Buttermere with Crummock Water and Ennerdale Water, or turn north to visit Bassenthwaite Lake. Nidderdale, approached via Pateley Bridge from the south and Masham from the north, is notable for How Stean Gorge at the northern end and Gouthwaite Reservoir in the centre. The northern route crosses some glorious moorland on the way to Lofthouse, at the northern end of the dale, and is an ideal way to visit How Stean Gorge.
