Hillside Homestead: Weather for growth, pecking order changes.

http://hillsidehomestead.blogspot.com/2015/08/weather-for-growth-pecking-order-changes.html

Two city kids on our path to eating compassionately, from kit to kitchen. Updates Tuesday and Thursday. Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Weather for growth, pecking order changes. First things first, I want to give a shout out to our now 4 Patreon. Many are doing very well, but for today I'm going to focus on the beans, and the potatoes. Other than that I'm going to talk about the turkeys and the chickens a bit. The chickens are teaching the turkeys "how to chicken" which is funny, except when they're rolling ar...

Hillside Homestead: Sometimes you have to eat the pork chop.

http://hillsidehomestead.blogspot.com/2015/07/sometimes-you-have-to-eat-pork-chop.html

Two city kids on our path to eating compassionately, from kit to kitchen. Updates Tuesday and Thursday. Thursday, July 30, 2015. Sometimes you have to eat the pork chop. Today we're going to talk about a topic that we aren't necessarily fond of, and that's the reality of food when you leave your home. The quote in the title comes from The Compassionate Carnivore. July 30, 2015 at 2:01 PM. Or, if you want you could approach it from the practical side of the fasting monotheistic religions: Even on Yom Kipp...

Hillside Homestead: Bean trellis, and chickens in the greens.

http://hillsidehomestead.blogspot.com/2015/07/bean-trellis-and-chickens-in-greens.html

Two city kids on our path to eating compassionately, from kit to kitchen. Updates Tuesday and Thursday. Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Bean trellis, and chickens in the greens. The beans had been going a bit crazy, and lacking something more solid to climb, they'd been climbing up the garlic in the front bed. It can be kind of hard to tell in this photo Left. Last but not least I want to talk about a couple of the plants we got from the seedling swap. Left. Next week we're going to be very busy, so there is a p...

domestiCaited: The Native Seeds

http://domesticaited.blogspot.com/2014/12/the-native-seeds.html

Sunday, December 7, 2014. Several weeks ago I promised a list of the seeds that I have planted in the yard to overwinter. Here it finally is! This is the front bed with the bags of soil. 22 species total, with a little variety in heights, blooming time, and sun requirements. There are a few that I'm really excited about. Doll's Eyes. They're weird. That's all the reason I need. Prairie Smoke, which I think is beautiful. It should add a nice splash of pink to the yard. Coneflower (probably pale purple).

domestiCaited: 2015 Updated Yard Plant List

http://domesticaited.blogspot.com/2015/05/2015-updated-yard-plant-list.html

Saturday, May 9, 2015. 2015 Updated Yard Plant List. The 2015 growing season is in full swing! There's been a lot of changes in the yard and I wanted to have an updated plant list. I'll work on a map later this season, but here's the new list! Prairie Plants = 52. Four types of aster (new england, aromatic). Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus. False Aster - boltonia asteroides. Queen of the Prairie. Shade Plants = 21. Illinois Prairie Rose (Rosa setigera). Shrubby St. John's Wort. And then the food plants!

Sunday, June 21, 2015. Stewardship and Ethics in the Home Garden. This is a difficult post for me to write, because it's both self-critical and centering around controversial native landscape ethics. Yes, such a topic does exist, and is constantly evolving due to the "science" of restoration and issues of colonialism and sovereignty. There's a lot you can read about it on a large scale but for me the question is - how do stewardship and ethics apply to the home garden? As you can see in my yard list.

domestiCaited: December 2012

http://domesticaited.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Sunday, December 9, 2012. I should explain before anything else that I have two rules for my yard, that make design more challenging but incredibly satisfying. Every I plant has to either be:. 1) Native to central Illinois. 2) Used in food production. Here's a drawing of the yard as it is today, after our first six months here:. Next, I worked out where I hope the yard will be at the end of 2013 a year from now. Page from facebook and transform our yard. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Ken Albala's Food Rant.

domestiCaited: March 2012

http://domesticaited.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Friday, March 23, 2012. These seedlings have just been full of surprises. It's been five days and all but one type of seed (the Rosemary) has sprouted. The Lavender only has a few up, but it's at least something. Everything else has already become a monster. It's actually inconvenient, since I started seeds because I wanted it to take a while. All the packets said germination would take 2-3 weeks! I mean, look at how big they are. Some are already in the 4-5 inches range. What monsters! Successful - so a...

Tuesday, December 31, 2013. A 2013 Yard Retrospective. Well, hello there readers! It's been over a year since I updated this, for good reason as you know. So we'll start out with an obligatory picture of the nursery, for record-keeping's sake. It matches the domesticated theme, after all. The Sanctuary of Evie B. The reason I wanted to post, though, was to reflect on the progress we made in the yard during 2013. When I left you in December 2012, this was the way the yard looked. Due to a very generous co...
