Emotional Drumming: June 2014
http://emotionaldrumming.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, June 26, 2014. Big Kids (Topshelf, 2010). One of the earlier entries in this still on-going "emo revival," at least that I had heard of, I dragged my feet for a while with Big Kids. I purchased their 2010 debut LP, Hoop Dreams. At the Topshelf Records. Tent at Bled Fest. Last month, and, it's a hell of a time. There are some nods to Alkaline Trio. Here and there, but, I'd say the bands' biggest influences are probably early Small Brown Bike. And even more so Hot Water Music. Senior Service," "B...

Emotional Drumming: Favorite Books Read in 2014
http://emotionaldrumming.blogspot.com/2014/12/favorite-books-read-in-2014.html
Tuesday, December 23, 2014. Favorite Books Read in 2014. Let the year-end posts begin! Last year, I really enjoyed reading Jason Zinoman's. Which looked at the important, classic horror films of the 1970s. David Konow's. Covers those same films, and then some. It is 500 pages and touches on more minor entries in the genre, the classic Universal Monsters. Films, and also moves on through 80s, 90s and 00s horror. The depth that Shock Value. Goes into is great, but, the variety that Reel Terror. Collection ...

Emotional Drumming: Favorite Albums of 2014: Honorable Mentions
http://emotionaldrumming.blogspot.com/2014/12/favorite-albums-of-2014-honorable.html
Friday, December 26, 2014. Favorite Albums of 2014: Honorable Mentions. I'm going to go so far as to say that 2014 was a really great year for music. Much better than 2013. There was enough for me to like that I was once again able to come up with a list of 40 favorite albums (last year I sort of forced it) and 15 favorite EPs/7"s. And, here, I'm even doing an honorable mentions post! Let's get on with it. Best of Boiler Room Classics. Mike Adams at His Honest Weight (Flannelgraph/Joyful Noise). I will s...

Emotional Drumming: April 2014
http://emotionaldrumming.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Friday, April 25, 2014. Show Me the Way to Go Home. Cain Marko (Tapes Not Bombs, 2012). Were an excellent Grand Rapids, MI noodly pop punk band that just recently broke up, unfortunately. 2012's Show Me the Way to Go Home. Four Dutchmen Walk Into a Bar.," ".Then Ride Into the Apocalypse," "Promises in Pen," "Show Me the Way to Go Home," "Kitchen Knife," "It's Just You and Me, Hemingway! Moonshine Aviation," "Three Word Graveyard". Show Me The Way To Go Home by Cain Marko. I recall hearing of Fireside.

Emotional Drumming: Favorite Albums of 2014: #40-21
http://emotionaldrumming.blogspot.com/2014/12/favorite-albums-of-2014-40-21.html
Monday, December 29, 2014. Favorite Albums of 2014: #40-21. Is an Oakland, CA punk rock band made up of former members of Big Kids. One of the earlier Topshelf. Bands). Rabid Moon. Was one of the first records I listened to in 2014. Generally, these songs remind me of a mix of Jawbreaker. And early Archers of Loaf's. Punkier moments. I had actually sort of forgotten about it until I was prepping to make this list. Rabid Moon by Acid Fast. I'm no Blonde Redhead. Are not particularly good. Barragan. Produc...

Emotional Drumming: September 2014
http://emotionaldrumming.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Saturday, September 27, 2014. Chavez (Matador, 1996). I got into Chavez's. First record last summer, and now am finally doing the same with their second and final one, Ride the Fader. While I'm bummed that they only released two records in their existence, I'm not sure that I could have asked for anything else from them. Ride the Fader. Is more melodic, technical, angular guitar rock. It might be even more accessible than 1995's Gone Glimmering. All to be kindred spirits here. 24 Hour Revenge Therapy.

Emotional Drumming: February 2014
http://emotionaldrumming.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Saturday, February 15, 2014. Crystal Skulls (Suicide Squeeze, 2006). I believe it was my bud Julian who tipped me off to Crystal Skulls. Not along after their sophomore effort, Outgoing Behavior. Was released. Aside from the title track and "The Cosmic Door," which are still far and away the best tracks here, I don't think I entirely got it until now. This is some nice soft rock (think Fleetwood Mac. Touring band and Fleet Foxes. At this stage in my life, I prefer Crystal Skulls. Euphone (Jade Tree, 2000).

Emotional Drumming: November 2014
http://emotionaldrumming.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 7, 2014. Lifetime (Jade Tree, 1995). I knew of Lifetime. In high school because of Jade Tree Records. And I should have listened to them then. They played a poppy, yet, very intense style of punk rock that has influenced many, most notably early Saves the Day. And recent kings of the style, Title Fight. In the near future. The Ocean Blue (Sire, 1991). Covering it back in 2004 or 2005, which makes a lot of sense). So, I decided to take the plunge into 1991's Cerulean. Echo and the Bunnymen.

Emotional Drumming: July 2014

Friday, July 18, 2014. These Are Good People. Little Big League (Tiny Engines, 2013). For some idiotic reason, I was hesitant to listen to this last year. It got some favorable reviews from some trusted sources, including my girlfriend Sara, who doesn't even particularly care for the whole emo thing, and I still decided to skip it. I'm a dummy, and am publicly, formally admitting it to you now. After spending some good time with it, I realize that These Are Good People. Sign o' the Times. Sign o' the Tim...

Emotional Drumming: March 2014
http://emotionaldrumming.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, March 20, 2014. 1 Tampa Bay Rays. 2 New York Yankees. 4 Boston Red Sox. 5 Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankees are looking to be in way better shape than they did at any point last year. Their high profile additions should help big time, and they very much could win the division this year. They coulld win 92 games and nab a Wild Card spot, but, they could also win 88 and entirely miss the playoffs. 2 Kansas City Royals. 4 Chicago White Sox. 4 Los Angeles Angels. 3 New York Mets. 1 St Louis Cardinals.
