Homebrewing in Hawaii

Wednesday, August 13, 2014. The downside is that the carbonation drops end up costing around 10X more than just buying sugar and mixing it in with the whole batch. But in the end that's still just an extra 10 cents a bottle. If I can do away with one more brewing difficulty, 10 cents a bottle is worth it to me. Thursday, August 7, 2014. Back in April I posted about making mead for marriage gifts. Tuesday, August 5, 2014. A book to drink beer to. Just a quick post to help spread the word about my new fict...

Homebrewing in Hawaii: November 2013

http://www.homebrewhawaii.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 20, 2013. MICROBREWED ADVENTURES by Charlie Papazian; the Waves of Craft Beer. One of the very first books I read about brewing was the third edition of Charlie Papazian's The Complete Joy of Homebrewing. It's a great book, commonly considered the homebrewer's bible- if a homebrewer has only read one book about brewing, chances are the book they've read is Charlie's. Recently I've been working my way through another book written by Papazian: Microbrewed Adventures. My mother-in-law bo...

Homebrewing in Hawaii: December 2013

http://www.homebrewhawaii.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Monday, December 23, 2013. I've posted about bottling. On every bottle, stands for Southern Breakfast. Most homebrewers probably initial their caps, in order to tell the beers apart once you've got selections from several brews sitting side by side. I certainly do. Monday, December 16, 2013. Or even reaching levels that cause the bottles to explode. I brewed a few dozen batches of beer back in San Francisco before moving here, and never had this problem there, so I started thinking it must have something...

Homebrewing in Hawaii: BREW'd is now open

http://www.homebrewhawaii.blogspot.com/2014/07/brewd-is-now-open.html

Wednesday, July 30, 2014. BREW'd is now open. More (sort of) old news: BREW'd. Is open. and it's beautiful. It's got a classy ambiance- think dark woods and dim lighting instead of REAL's yellow walls- but they've worked some irreverence into the wall mural. Sixteen taps, and the same cicerone-type level of beer knowledge and passion. My wife and I stopped in for the Sierra Nevada Beer Camp event a few weeks ago, and had a great time. Homebrewing in Hawaii: Making Mead

http://www.homebrewhawaii.blogspot.com/2014/04/making-mead.html

Tuesday, April 8, 2014. Wedding season is coming up. My wife and I have four weddings we'll be attending this summer, three of which are happening here on O'ahu, and going to weddings usually involves giving a wedding gift. I'm not especially excited about picking an item off a Williams Sonoma registry- seems sort of impersonal to me, you know? So I've decided to give the newlyweds a gift of homebrewed mead instead. Happiness is how, not what; a talent, not an object". Brew Sessions and Recipes. Wednesday, February 5, 2014. Getting Reacquainted With My Old Friend Mead. Dry as can be. Last September I made a mead using some beautiful orange blossom honey and Lalvin 71B. Half of the 12 pounds. DeeperRootsBrewing: The Perils (and Triumphs) of Experimentation

Happiness is how, not what; a talent, not an object". Brew Sessions and Recipes. Wednesday, September 26, 2012. The Perils (and Triumphs) of Experimentation. In mid-July I brewed side-by-side experimental saisons. Had dates and molasses added, and Protagonist Cucumber Saison. Protagonist Cucumber Saison down the drain. I added too much molasses and dates to the Dark Saison, making the taste harsh and overly sweet at the same time. With the Cucumber Saison, I left the cucumbers in secondary too long, ...

DeeperRootsBrewing: March 2014

http://deeperrootsbrewing.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html

Happiness is how, not what; a talent, not an object". Brew Sessions and Recipes. Sunday, March 9, 2014. 8 hours after pitching. Some ideas take a while to play out completely. I've been tossing around the idea of making a cyser for the past couple years, but despite (or perhaps because of) the simplicity of the process, it just never happened. I had the honey. I had access to the cider. I had picked the brains of cider makers and (re)read information online and in The Compleat Meadmaker. Put on by Quaff.
