Explore: Beneath and Beyond. Wednesday, 8 April 2015. Ten Examples of When Size Matters. In my last post. I introduced ranks for measuring things, now it's time to apply that by seeing how it can answer 10 completely different questions. Q1: What are the stats for a Dwarf? Humanoids are given a size which affects both height and weight, then an extra negative height mod for short and stout races, or positive height mod for tall and thin ones. So 4'6' , 125lbs, -1 Athletics, -1 Kill. An increase in densit...

8230;and a Brace of Pistols. Dedicated to swashbuckling, fantasy and horror gaming. Samhain is for Witch Hunters. All Hallow’s Eve. Is upon us, and compared to last year there has been a complete dearth of Witch Hunter material. Especially compared with last year. There are a lot of excuses I could throw out there, chef among them being that my group really hasn’t played since August! And while there have been some promises, for the most part it’s been quiet as the grave. The Hammer of Witches) for.

Explore: Beneath & Beyond: On Archery II: Longbows
http://explorebeneathandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015/08/on-archery-ii-longbows.html
Explore: Beneath and Beyond. Sunday, 16 August 2015. On Archery II: Longbows. In my last post. I talked about to-hit penalties due to range, but left the subject of damage penalties. The aerodynamics of arrows are simple (once you've got the data) but the mechanics of a bow are tricky, and not many sites consider what would be an ideal bow for a Halfling! I’ll start with a summary of the rules my investigations lead to:. The ideal Longbow is one size longer. A 7' bow weighs 2lb and shoots 2'8' arrows wei...

Explore: Beneath and Beyond. Tuesday, 28 April 2015. Here's the last in the current series of posts about my wounds-instead-of-hit-points-combat-system. There are a couple of points to cover, so I'll dive straight in. Balanced but meaningful weapon choices. In RPGs there are often "better" weapon choices which conflicts with "in character" choices, or alternatively all weapons are the same. I want players to have a variety of weapon options with equivalent good but different game mechanics. 1-handed weap...

Explore: Beneath and Beyond. Tuesday, 31 March 2015. The Best: The Maps of Pete Fenlon. Over the years there have been many fantastic maps in RPGs, many have captured my imagination, but none to the extent that Peter Fenlon's maps for MERP did. I still wished for a map that joined them all together, but it looked like a lot of work, then a couple of years ago this collage map below appeared on the internet from zikull (whoever he is). A fantastic job! Taken from http:/ rpgmaps.profantasy.com/? The door o...

Explore: Beneath and Beyond. Thursday, 25 June 2015. Imagine the following scene…. I want that reflected in how the scene plays out at the table. Here's how it looks with my combat system:. Elanor - the first Orc is now passing your vantage point. I whistle and let loose my arrow at the first Orc. I leap to my feet and spring down the slope, throw my hand axe at that Orc, cast Lightning Blade, and rush the Orcs. I stand up, throw my spear at that Orc, and rush the Orcs. I lightning bolt the wagon driver.

Explore: Beneath and Beyond. Friday, 31 July 2015. Presented missile range penalties. For Explore, I gave a to-hit penalty of -1 per range increment over 20’ (where ranges go up as 20’, 30’, 40’, 60’ etc., doubling every other category). This fits the main overriding requirement - "simple" – but was unsatisfactory for a number of reasons which have niggled:. 1) Does this increase in difficulty reflect the real world? 2) What about large or small targets? 4) Should there be a damage penalty for long range?

Explore: Beneath & Beyond: Sizing Things Up
http://explorebeneathandbeyond.blogspot.com/2015/04/sizing-things-up.html
Explore: Beneath and Beyond. Wednesday, 8 April 2015. By way of explanation: This blog mostly consists of extracts from my homebrew system Explore, but they should mostly be applicable to any other system which is vaguely OSR related due to a shared heritage. Explore is a traditional role playing game of exploration / adventure / intrigue in a world of swords / sorcery / monsters. The rules have been iteratively developed and refined through the fire of play testing (I have very critical players! If a 6&...
