Obscure and lost details on how to build a house in 1905. THE ARCHITECT AND THE DOWNSPOUT. THE ARCHITECT AND THE DOWNSPOUT. Posted by je at 9:19 PM. As Jim Scotchler began shingling the back of the house, the "things" became a consideration. The things had to come off the wall, then the things had to go back in place once the shingling was done. And what in the world are the things for,. A little survey of the use of downspouts in this period in architectural history yields fascinating results (and that'...

Obscure and lost details on how to build a house in 1905. THE WONDER THAT WAS CREOSOTE STAIN. THE WONDER THAT WAS CREOSOTE STAIN. Posted by je at 8:51 PM. What if you could take a delicate thing like a house shingle and make it last forever, never losing its color? Well, maybe not "forever," but certainly for decades beyond its expected life? Such a technology existed once, and played a nearly-forgotten role in the pageant of American architecture. Creosote, or more specifically, coal tar. By Samuel Cabo...

Obscure and lost details on how to build a house in 1905. THE PUZZLE OF THE CURIOUS VENT. THE PUZZLE OF THE CURIOUS VENT. Posted by je at 5:56 PM. When the roof shingles were removed, we hoped to finally solve the last big architectural mystery of Comstock House - but what we found was completely unexpected, and has led to other questions we still can't answer for certain. However that system was designed, we believed it apparently wasn't very successful. Between the earliest known photo. One theory was ...

Restoration Work at Comstock House: NEW STEPS ALL AROUND

Restoration Work at Comstock House. NEW STEPS ALL AROUND. SHINGLING THE NORTH FACE. NEW STEPS ALL AROUND. The front porch certainly had seen happier days by the time we moved into Comstock. House Part of the floor was rotted. And needed urgent replacement, the stone lions had crushed the stair side platforms (original 1905 redwood, too), almost all treads were split, and the entire step assembly was pitching forward away from the house. And, as we found out, that wasn't the bad. The back stairs were a le...

Restora Obscura: BARGEBOARD MYSTERIES

Obscure and lost details on how to build a house in 1905. THE PUZZLE OF THE CURIOUS VENT. Posted by je at 7:30 PM. In the months leading up to the roofing project, most attention was over something no one will ever notice. Hopefully. Besides the failing shingle roof that had us playing attic shuffleboard with buckets during every rain, there was clearly serious problems with the bargeboard - namely, that most of it was either gone or rotted. It was contractor David Jessen. To mill these custom pieces (an...
