Journal of a Minnesota Angler. Fishing Stories of an avid fisherman. Ken is my father-in-law. He got me back into fishing after a 15 year hiatus by buying me a Shimano combo rod and reel for Christmas in 2000. We’ve been fishing together ever since. We’re usually up at his cabin on the Gunflint Trail in the arrowhead of Minnesota fishing the various lakes in the area. He lives in Montana now, but he plans to be back to visit. And when he does, I hope we get to go out a few more times. Matt is an ex-colle...

Journal of a Minnesota Angler. Fishing Stories of an avid fisherman. First Outing of 2014. On May - 27 - 2014. The fishing opener everyone talks about in Minnesota is usually in mid-May, but that only applies to walleye and northern pike. Those of us who target bass have to wait an extra two weeks, usually the Saturday of Memorial Weekend. I think I spent more time thinking about and playing with my new toy than concentrating on fishing. I will write a review at a later date, but in general, I am ver...

Hump Day Outings | Journal of a Minnesota Angler

Journal of a Minnesota Angler. Fishing Stories of an avid fisherman. On July - 13 - 2013. After the great outing we had on Tuesday. I had high hopes for the rest of the week. On Wednesday morning, I headed out to Kloek Channel and landed a 12″ smallie on my second cast on a white super fluke. A few casts later, I hooked into another one but when it got near the boat, it spit out my hook and also left a trail of regurgitated crayfish behind. Before, but it doesn’t happen that often. I tried lindy rigging.

Journal of a Minnesota Angler. Fishing Stories of an avid fisherman. One for the Road. On July - 22 - 2013. We had planned to end our week on the Gunflint Trail on Saturday afternoon. I had one more opportunity to wet a line before we left, so I took full advantage of it. On the next cast, I did get hit and it was a small smallie at 10″. Looking at the week’s tally (below), it turned out to be a pretty good week. Fourteen fish in all including two for the BP Minnesocold Bass Derby. MNAngler: Smallmouth b...

Quiet Independence Day | Journal of a Minnesota Angler
http://www.journalofamnangler.com/2013/07/16/quiet-independence-day
Journal of a Minnesota Angler. Fishing Stories of an avid fisherman. On July - 16 - 2013. On a day ripe with American celebration, I hoped for fireworks both on and off the water. Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans. That night, Ken, George, April, and I headed to Rush Creek Bay. We eased into the bay and while casting at the spot I caught my personal best smallie, I got a nibble on a green wacky worm, but couldn’t hook into it. MNAngler: Smallmouth bass: 8, Walleye: 1.
