A break! | Is there no sin in it?
https://istherenosininit.wordpress.com/2009/09/20/a-break
Is there no sin in it? Ethics, empiricism, and auxiliary verbs. Thanks so much for all the lovely comments on the preceding posts; y’all are incredibly sweet. I’m going to be taking things down for a little while, as dissertation-writing and job-applying is taking up all of my energy right now and I’ve had little time for writing and reading as well as you deserve. I’ll be back, I promise! I just need to get a lot of stuff done very quickly. Written by A White Bear. September 20, 2009 at 2:05 pm. Breaks ...

You don't meet nice girls in coffeeshops: February 2009
http://onemorepseudonym.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
You don't meet nice girls in coffeeshops. On being the other woman in New York, academia, and beyond. For it is with this world that we shall always have to concern ourselves: the world is not to be learned and thrown aside, but reverted to and relearned." - Browning, "Essay on Shelley". I want to write a story or a poem about using numbers as metaphors. Something like that is my prayer for the next few days. In the archive of the evanescent. Walter Pater, "Joachim du Bellay," from The Renaissance. He's ...

Books Do Furnish A Room: In a dark room we can do just as we like
http://booksdofurnisharoom.blogspot.com/2009/02/in-dark-room-we-can-do-just-as-we-like.html
Books Do Furnish A Room. Saturday, February 07, 2009. In a dark room we can do just as we like. In a nutshell, I think Johnson is too quick to downplay, 1, the damage that even "unenforceable" policies can do, and 2, the long-term social and political costs of states criminalizing, rather than merely ignoring, the "counter-economy" or radical sector more generally. The discretion such laws inevitably require. If everyone is guilty of something, officials can effectively target people. Against the arbitra...

Books Do Furnish A Room: Response to von Lohmann
http://booksdofurnisharoom.blogspot.com/2009/02/response-to-von-lohmann.html
Books Do Furnish A Room. Wednesday, February 04, 2009. Response to von Lohmann. Fred von Lohmann of EFF. Stopped by and left a comment that's worth addressing directly:. I'm not quite that pessimistic. I think the general approach of the settlement - a collecting society to solve the problem of getting permission for all the orphan works, along with an opt out right - is the right one. At the same time, I agree that we need to take steps to reduce the "Google monopoly over books" risk. That said, I don't.

Books Do Furnish A Room: December 2008
http://booksdofurnisharoom.blogspot.com/2008_12_01_archive.html
Books Do Furnish A Room. Friday, December 12, 2008. Huh I drafted this post a year and a half ago, but just noticed yesterday that it was never "published." I suspect that I meant to get back to it and write more about how Prakash's arguments fail, but what I did write is free-standing enough that it might be of interest to jurisprudes. At first glance this just seems a fancy way of restating the obvious. Isn't this what Amar's intratextualism is all about, or Balkin's search for original principles,...

Books Do Furnish A Room: April 2008

Books Do Furnish A Room. Tuesday, April 15, 2008. Consequentialism and the demandingness objection. The demandingness objection against consequentialism- that, since it bases the right on maximizing the good, it demands perfection from moral agents- has never struck me as being all that problematic. Indeed, I'm rather puzzled that so many find it a reductio; what's so weird about the claim that you should always do better? Posted by X.Trapnel. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Is There Not A Cause
Monday, October 26, 2015. I have 6 children, but two almost always seem to be absent from my photos. I need to do a photo shoot with just my two older kiddos to prove they actually DO exist. They keep me on my toes and I love it! People wonder what it's like having this many children in the home (6 children is NOT a lot, btw), and I would call it controlled chaos. At any moment, it could turn into massively loud, out of control, things breaking, but I am the lasso on their crazy! Everyone of my littles w...
