Mourning Dove - (Zenaida macoura). Ourning Doves and the smaller Common Ground Doves. Are found year-round in any area of the Imperial Valley - including urban backyards. He slightly larger White-winged Doves. Are more seasonal and tend to stay in the southern and eastern desert rural areas of the Valley. Yellow-Headed Blackbird - (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus). Rriving in the spring, flocks of these birds build their nests in Imperial Valley marshes and drainage ditches where cattail reeds grow. Hey 'dance' on the banks to attract a mate and then stay throughout our hot summer before heading south to Mexico for the winter. Here was once a bounty paid for this infamous "chicken hawk" until farmers found out what a great natural pest control it is - eating far more rodents than chickens. Lthough other large hawks can be found in the Imperial Valley, the chances are if you see a large hawk atop the telephone poles along rural roads - it's a red-tail.
