The Laughing Yeti: Hilary Plum, On Reading

http://laughingyeti.blogspot.com/2012/11/hilary-plum-on-reading.html

Notes From The Journal I Never Wrote And Other Scribbles. Tuesday, November 20, 2012. Hilary Plum, On Reading. I read The Tunnel. Mornings at my kitchen table, all day had to sweat off the stench. Reading about Sacco and Vanzetti I rode a train across. Against the green countryside, red roofs, slim roads diving into fields and threading mountains, they must die. In bed as a girl I read Yeats and Dickinson and remember no more than a rhythm. I hope I am not alone in this. I still have some lover’s m...

Notes From The Journal I Never Wrote And Other Scribbles. Monday, May 19, 2014. Anna David, On Reading. One of the greatest gifts my family gave me was a love for reading. My mom and I would lie around, side by side, reading our respective books from the time I was a little girl. Even though she was getting her PhD in English and reading 18th century literature and I was reading Judy Blume, she always told me that what. Is the author of Party Girl. The Laughing Yeti: Fight Song By Joshua Mohr

http://laughingyeti.blogspot.com/2013/02/fight-song-by-joshua-mohr.html

Notes From The Journal I Never Wrote And Other Scribbles. Monday, February 25, 2013. Fight Song By Joshua Mohr. Not many authors can shift from satire to sentiment so easily, but Mohr is a clever enough writer that he manages to pull this off.As the plot in Fight Song. Becomes increasingly surreal, it gets funnier, and the emotional veins it taps into grow more real and textured. The novel becomes a kind of parable, a story of man searching for redemption." — LA Times. A New York Times. One of O Magazine.

Annotations of the writers, by the writers, for the writers…. May 31, 2014. Book by Raymond Chandler. Annotation by Hedwika Cox. Raymond Chandler provides minimal insight into the third person experience of Philip Marlowe. We are okay with this. Because despite this detail, we still receive an enlightened perspective of the world around him through his language. In fact, Chandler’s extensive use of imagery serves as the primary device that gives us substantial insight of his characters. A Life in Men.

Annotations of the writers, by the writers, for the writers…. January 6, 2015. January 7, 2015. Book by Chimananda Ngozi Adichie. Annotation by Roz Weisberg. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah has an interesting quality in the way the story and the writing expand and contract within the narrative. This element in the narrative is reflected in Ifemelu’s character, who I think comes across at times detached, even passive as events and attitudes unfold around her. Noir, Dames and Real Women. Noir, Dames and Real Women | Annotation Nation

https://annotationnation.wordpress.com/2014/07/06/noir-dames-and-real-women

Annotations of the writers, by the writers, for the writers…. Noir, Dames and Real Women. July 6, 2014. Annotation by Melissa F. Olson. I love crime fiction. I especially love the old noir detective fiction. It’s just that I don’t always love what happens to the women who appear in it. Unless you’ve been in this position yourself, I’m not sure you can understand just how flat-out. When I finished all the available Parker, I decided to backtrack to some of the classic hardboiled novels of the 30’s: Dashie...
